Maika Monroe Praises Timothée Chalamet’s Career Amid Backlash

Maika Monroe recently shared her memories of collaborating with Timothée Chalamet, amid growing criticism following his controversial statements about opera and ballet. The actress recalled their time on the 2017 film Hot Summer Nights, highlighting Chalamet’s early days before he gained widespread recognition.

Monroe described the moment Chalamet auditioned for the role, explaining how she had already been cast and participated in multiple chemistry reads with various actors. Chalamet was among the last to audition after her casting was confirmed.

Impressions of Chalamet’s Audition and Talent

Recalling the audition, Monroe noted:

“I mean, I had the part first, and I did chemistry reads with, you know, four different guys, and he was one of the kids that came in,”

she said.

She described him as a small and slender actor and initially questioned their romantic compatibility on screen due to their physical differences. Yet, she was quickly impressed:

“He was this tiny, little, skinny kid, and … he walked in the room, and I was like, ‘I just … I don’t know how we fit, like, romantically. I don’t know if… physically [works]. And he just absolutely, like, blew it out of the water,”

Monroe recalled.

Early Career Context and Monroe’s High Regard

At the time they met, Chalamet had just completed or was about to film Call Me By Your Name, a project that would soon catapult him into the spotlight. Monroe remembered the impression he left on everyone present:

“He left the room, and we’re all just like, ‘What just happened’,”

she shared during a March 9 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Expressing strong admiration, Monroe said:

“I think he was always just destined for this. I think he was made for this job and this career, for sure,”

adding confidence to his rise in Hollywood.

Context of “Hot Summer Nights” and Current Controversy

Hot Summer Nights told the story of a sheltered teenager coming of age on Cape Cod while involved in drug dealing and romantic entanglements, where Chalamet portrayed the lead character opposite Monroe’s role as his business partner’s sister. The film marked Chalamet’s breakthrough before he became a household name and Oscar nominee.

Monroe’s commendation of Chalamet’s talent arrives as he faces backlash for remarks made in a February 2026 Variety/CNN town hall. During the discussion with Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet said that “no one cares” about ballet or opera anymore, a comment that has sparked criticism.

Significance of Monroe’s Support Amid Rising Criticism

Monroe’s praise highlights the early recognition of Chalamet’s potential from someone who witnessed his performance firsthand during his formative career period. Her comments contrast with the current wave of disappointment and tension surrounding his recent statements, which challenge the appreciation of traditional art forms like opera and ballet.

As Chalamet approaches the prospect of his first Oscar, this tension between his celebrated talent and controversial remarks may influence public perception and impact his standing within both the film community and broader audience.
