Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir Series Offers a Bold New Spider-Man

The upcoming Spider-Noir series introduces a fresh chapter in the Spider-Man live-action universe, spotlighting a unique version of the hero voiced by Nicolas Cage. Scheduled to debut domestically on MGM+ on May 25 and internationally on Prime Video two days later, this show brings the focus to Ben Reilly, known as The Spider, in a storyline set in the 1930s. The release coincides with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, which premieres on July 31, adding to the growing excitement within the Marvel franchise.

Distinct Spider-Man Variants and Creative Vision

Oren Uziel, the series creator, explained in an Empire Magazine interview how Cage’s portrayal differs from the Spider-Man voice role he performed in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Uziel emphasized that while Cage’s voice remains familiar, this Spider-Noir character has a “different flavour.”

He made it clear that the series does not serve as a continuation of Into The Spider-Verse, stating,

“It’s not a continuation of Into The Spider-Verse. Once Phil and Chris introduced the idea of the multiverse, I think you’re allowed to take things and make them your own.”

—Oren Uziel, series creator

The choice to bring Ben Reilly as the central Spider-Man was intentional to

“make a version of Spider-Man that no-one had ever seen before.”

This creative direction opens new narrative possibilities for the character and the franchise.

Nicolas Cage’s Performance and Series Atmosphere

Uziel shared his experience watching Cage perform, noting how the actor delivered his lines “with pleasure and glee,” describing the moment as

“one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.”

This enthusiasm sets an energetic tone for the series, which explores a darker, noir-styled take on the Spider-Man legacy.

Setting and Supporting Characters

The show is anchored in the 1930s, with Ben Reilly operating under the moniker The Spider. Executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have transitioned from their success with animated Spider-Man projects to shepherd this live-action adaptation. The storytelling will also incorporate iconic Spider-Man villains like Sandman and Electro, reimagined through the period’s unique lens.

Series Cast Highlights

The cast features Nicolas Cage as the lead character in the noir-inspired role. Lamorne Morris voices Robbie Robertson, Brendan Gleeson and Abraham Popoola also bring vital contributions to the project. Their combined talents enrich the series with depth and authenticity.

Anticipated Impact and Future Prospects

The Spider-Noir series marks an innovative expansion of the Spider-Man franchise, blending nostalgia with fresh interpretations that could attract both longtime fans and new viewers. It highlights Marvel’s growing interest in exploring diverse multiverse narratives and stylistic variations within its iconic superhero stories. The timing alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s cinematic release may foster increased engagement across platforms, signaling a promising future for this bold reinterpretation.
