Colman Domingo addressed concerns surrounding the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, titled Michael, following Paris Jackson’s criticism of the film last year. The actor, who portrays Joe Jackson, the patriarch of the Jackson family, expressed his hope that Paris will come to appreciate the tribute made about her father.
The Euphoria star told WSJ Magazine in an interview published Tuesday,
“eventually loves the tribute that we made about her father.”
Paris Jackson Challenges the Film’s Portrayal and Production Claims
Paris Jackson publicly criticized Domingo and the film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, in September 2025. She disputed Domingo’s earlier remarks to People magazine, where he stated that Paris and her brother, Prince Jackson, were “very much in support” of the project. Paris clarified her actual involvement on Instagram, writing,
“[Colman Domingo], don’t be telling people I was ‘helpful’ on the set of a movie I had zero percent involvement in lol that is so weird.”
She added,
“I read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my notes about what was dishonest/didn’t sit right with me and when they didn’t address it I moved on with my life. Not my monkeys not my circus. God bless and god speed.”
Domingo Clarifies His Position and Interaction with Paris Jackson
Domingo explained to WSJ that his previous comments were “conflated” and “taken out of context,” noting that the original article was updated to better reflect his statements. He also revealed that he reached out to Paris Jackson via Instagram direct message, and she responded with a heart emoji, indicating some level of positive acknowledgment.
Exploring the Complex Character of Joe Jackson
In the interview, Domingo reflected on portraying Joe Jackson, who Michael Jackson claimed had been abusive during his childhood. The actor emphasized understanding Joe’s humanity despite the controversial nature of his character.
“For me, it was about finding his humanity. He created some of the most iconic artists that have ever walked this earth,”
Domingo said. He also discussed Joe’s strict parenting style, stating,
“He chastised his children. It’s always going to be arguable what’s right and a great method.”
Film Details and Supporting Cast Highlights
The biopic received involvement from Michael Jackson’s estate, ensuring a level of authenticity in the film’s portrayal. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, will make his feature film debut as the King of Pop. The cast also includes notable actors such as Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, Derek Luke, and Nia Long, who plays Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson.
Michael is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX on April 24, after multiple delays in its release.
