Sooraj Barjatya’s latest film, Uunchai, has created waves in the cinema world, boasting an impressive worldwide collection of Rs 50 crore and two prestigious National Awards. Released in 2022, the adventure drama stars Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Danny Denzongpa, Parineeti Chopra, Neena Gupta, and Sarika. The film has resonated with audiences across generations, completing a remarkable 50-day theatrical run.
At the upcoming 70th National Film Awards, Sooraj Barjatya was awarded his first National Award for Best Direction, while Neena Gupta earned her second National Award for Best Supporting Actress. In a revealing interview with Bollywood Bubble, Barjatya shared that the project’s initiation hinged entirely on Amitabh Bachchan’s involvement; had the superstar declined the role, he would not have moved forward with the film. Bachchan’s agreement laid a crucial foundation, leading to the enlistment of Boman Irani and Anupam Kher.
Uunchai follows the journey of three friends—Amit Srivastava (Amitabh Bachchan), Om Sharma (Anupam Kher), and Javed Siddiqui (Boman Irani)—as they embark on an expedition to Everest Base Camp to fulfill the last wish of their departed friend, Bhupen (Danny Denzongpa). This film marked a significant return for Sooraj Barjatya, who had not directed since the successful Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in 2015.
Although Uunchai received seven nominations at the 68th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, it didn’t attract any awards. Nonetheless, the film stands as the 60th production from Barjatya’s esteemed Rajshri Productions, showcasing the profound influence of Amitabh Bachchan on its success. The collaboration of this iconic actor not only defined the direction of Uunchai but also cemented its legacy in Indian cinema.
