Scoot Airborne Chess: Singapore Airlines’ subsidiary, Scoot, finds itself at a crossroads as it grapples with issues surrounding the Pratt & Whitney engines on some of its Airbus A320ceo aircraft. Chief Executive Leslie Thng revealed that, in response to the challenges, the low-cost carrier is actively considering the extension of leases for certain A320ceos, offering a unique solution to mitigate the impact of the ongoing engine concerns.
As of the end of September, Scoot proudly operates a fleet that includes 20 A320ceo aircraft. However, the specifics regarding the number of leased units and the potential extension of these leases remain to be clarified.
Thng pointed out that four affected engines have led to the grounding of two aircraft within the fleet. To address this, the airline is diligently working towards resolving the issues, with an ambitious target of fixing one of the grounded planes by the end of the month.
The root of the problem traces back to a rare powder metal defect identified by Pratt & Whitney‘s parent company, RTX, in July. This defect raises concerns about potential cracking in certain engine components, prompting an urgent call for accelerated inspections.

The industry anticipates these checks to result in the grounding of 600-700 Airbus jets between 2023 and 2026. Notably, two-thirds of these engine removals are planned for 2023 and the early months of 2024.
