Mark Strong Shines in Modern ‘Oedipus’ on Broadway This Fall

Mark Strong is set to take the Broadway stage in a compelling revival of Sophocles’ classic, “Oedipus.” This modern adaptation, helmed by creator and director Robert Icke, emerges after a highly acclaimed run in the West End. The production, which captivated London audiences and earned four Olivier Award nominations, reimagines the ancient tragedy on the pivotal night of an election. The show is slated for a 14-week run at Studio 54, beginning this November.

Strong, no stranger to the spotlight with his impactful performances in films like “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” shares the stage with Oscar-nominated actress Lesley Manville, making her Broadway debut. Their collaboration on this modern “Oedipus” interpreted Greek drama with such depth and nuance that it marked the highest-grossing limited engagement at Wyndham’s Theatre.

This Broadway endeavor is brought to life by producers Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Patrick Catullo, working alongside Roundabout Theater Company. As the fall season gears up for this much-anticipated opening, the staging promises to be a cultural highlight, juxtaposed against an election night backdrop that aligns with the narrative’s unfolding drama.

The new Broadway season also entertains other exciting ventures. However, “Oedipus,” headlined by Mark Strong, stands out as a significant marker in the theatre calendar. Looking ahead, the upcoming productions include the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” revival at Studio 54, scheduled for spring 2026. Meanwhile, August 2025 will see Todd Haimes Theatre close for an eight-month renovation.

The anticipation surrounding “Oedipus” is heightened by Strong’s immersive interpretation, delivering a performance that not only pays homage to the original Greek tragedy but also adapts it with modern relevance. As the curtains rise this fall, audiences and critics alike are eager to witness Mark Strong’s transformative portrayal on the Broadway stage, potentially setting a new benchmark for theatrical excellence.
