Tech Titans Rally: In a significant move, tech giants including Alphabet’s Google, Meta Platforms, and Qualcomm, among others, have united to establish the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE). This coalition has been formed in response to new EU tech regulations, and its primary objective is to advocate for open platforms and systems to stimulate growth and innovation within the European tech landscape.
Going beyond just a corporate collaboration, CODE envisions working closely with academia, policymakers, and various companies to delve into the realms of digital openness, especially concerning the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and potential future EU regulatory frameworks.
The DMA mandates gatekeepers, referring to major tech entities that control access to their platforms, to permit third parties to interoperate with their services. Moreover, these gatekeepers must allow their business users to promote their services and conclude contracts with their customers outside the gatekeeper’s platform. This represents a shift towards a more open and collaborative digital environment, fostering competition and innovation.
Stan Larroque, the founder of Lynx, one of the coalition members, emphasized the importance of openness in shaping digital ecosystems in Europe. He stated, “We have had a number of conversations in the past few months about what ‘good’ looks like when it comes to digital ecosystems in Europe, what fosters innovation, and what will positively impact competitiveness. We think openness is the crucial element.”

Apart from the major players like Google and Meta, other members of CODE include Chinese smart devices maker Honor, Lenovo, French augmented reality start-up Lynx, U.S. telecoms equipment maker Motorola, UK electronics maker Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera, and German messaging services provider Wire. This diverse group aims to collaborate across industries, striving to promote seamless connectivity, interoperable systems, and other aspects that contribute to open digital ecosystems.
As the coalition gains momentum, it stands as a testament to the industry’s recognition of the importance of collaboration and open standards.
