Deepika Padukone Criticizes Oscars for Overlooking Indian Films, Recalls Emotional RRR Win

Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone recently voiced her disappointment regarding the Oscars’ apparent neglect of Indian films. Sharing her thoughts on Instagram, Padukone highlighted India’s rich cinematic heritage and talent, emphasizing that Indian films have been overlooked numerous times.

Padukone, who gained international attention after presenting at the 2023 Oscars, believes that many deserving Indian films have been overlooked for awards they rightfully should have won. Speaking during preparations for a Louis Vuitton show in Paris, she recalled attending the ceremony where RRR triumphed with a win for the song “Naatu Naatu.”

Deepika Padukone expressed happiness for actor Adrien Brody, who secured the Best Actor accolade for “The Brutalist” at this year’s Oscars. However, when questioned about her personal stake in the awards, she candidly stated, “India has been robbed of the Oscars many times. Many, many deserving movies I feel like just get snubbed. Whether it’s movies or talent.”

The actress, known for her role in “Kalki 2898 AD,” shared her emotional connection to the RRR win. “When they announced RRR, I got emotional. Outside of being Indian, I really had nothing to do with that movie, but that was a huge, huge moment. That felt very, very personal,” she recalled.

For those unfamiliar, “Naatu Naatu” clinched victory in the Best Original Song category in 2023. As Padukone spoke in the video, clips of acclaimed Indian films such as Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light,” “Laapataa Ladies,” “Tumbbad,” and “The Lunchbox” were shown, all of which earned critical praise but missed out on Academy Award nominations.

Notable actor and filmmaker Mindy Kaling responded to Padukone’s video, reminiscing about their Oscar encounter, humorously admitting she almost couldn’t breathe upon meeting her. “You’re amazing!” Kaling wrote in the comments.

Deepika Padukone’s recent attendance at the Louis Vuitton show at the Cour Carrée du Louvre in Paris marked a significant moment, as she became the first Indian to sign as a global ambassador for both Louis Vuitton and Cartier.
