Chris Hemsworth on Why a Selfie Ruined His Friendship Chances with Billie Eilish

Chris Hemsworth may have jeopardized his friendship prospects with singer Billie Eilish after a candid encounter at the Oscars. On Wednesday, March 26, during his appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Hemsworth whimsically shared how a simple selfie at the event could have thwarted his chances of developing a genuine friendship with Eilish.

The moment captured on camera featured Eilish beaming alongside Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky. Recalling the event, Hemsworth, 41, explained how he initially wavered at the idea of requesting a photo with Eilish. Despite his reluctance, his children’s adoration of the singer swayed him. “I remember thinking, ‘Ah, don’t do it, don’t do it,'” Hemsworth recounted, adding humorously that it was in pursuit of impressing his children—daughter India, 12, and twin sons, Sasha and Tristan, 11.

“I was like ‘No, my kids are going to love this,’” he said, acknowledging the inevitable result. “The moment I took it, I was like ‘I went from work colleague to now like a fan.'” The selfie, according to Hemsworth, symbolized a shift from professional peer to an admiring fan, forever altering his standing. He laughed it off with Colbert, quipping, “We will never be friends, never be best friends.”

Though Hemsworth and Eilish have never worked directly together, being part of the same industry means their paths cross occasionally. The Thor star’s regretful jest sheds light on the intricacies and humorous pitfalls of celebrity camaraderie.

Despite this amusing selfie debacle, Hemsworth remains known for his amiable relationships within the celebrity circle. He shares a notably close bond with actor Matt Damon. The two families, including Pataky and Damon’s wife Luciano Barroso, frequently enjoy vacations together. “We became friends around the time I started to work, and I’ve really benefited from watching how he handles himself,” Hemsworth reflected in a GQ interview from 2020, describing Damon as a “normal guy who has the movie-star thing figured out.”

Elsa Pataky, affirming the camaraderie, highlighted the familial connection between the Hemsworths and the Damons. In a previous interview with People, she expressed admiration not only for Damon but also for Barroso. “Chris has been a big fan of Matt Damon, me too, and then when I met his wife, I’m even more of a fan of his wife,” Pataky shared, admiring their familial bonds as a vital link. “We have three kids, they have four kids, so we ended up making the same plans because everything we do with our kids, so it’s easier to do things with people that understand you,” she added.

While Chris Hemsworth’s lighthearted misstep at the Oscars may have cost him a prospective friendship with Billie Eilish, it highlights the often playful and unexpected journey of celebrity interactions and friendships, which remain ever-evolving.
