Sean Astin’s Tough Audition for Spielberg: How He Nearly Lost the Role in ‘The Goonies’

In a memorable audition experience, Sean Astin recalls the tense moments he faced while auditioning for the iconic film “The Goonies,” which nearly cost him the role. Astin shared his story during a panel at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., describing how filmmaker Steven Spielberg walked out on him after several unsuccessful attempts, leaving the young actor believing his Hollywood dreams were shattered.

Astin’s audition challenges came as a surprise, given Spielberg’s involvement in crafting the film’s story and the production by Amblin Entertainment. Despite the setbacks, Astin vividly remembers how director Richard Donner helped him turn things around. Donner’s guidance proved invaluable, as he offered Astin personalized advice and encouragement, transforming a nerve-wracking experience into a redeemable moment.

“He got on his knee, put his hand on my shoulder, and looked me in the eye,” Astin recounted. This personal touch and direction allowed Astin to focus and ultimately deliver a satisfactory performance, impressing Donner. The director’s belief in Astin’s potential brought forth the confidence necessary for him to secure the role of Mikey, alongside a talented ensemble cast featuring Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, Robert Davi, Josh Brolin, and Joe Pantoliano.

Reflecting on that pivotal event, Astin highlighted a unique gesture from Spielberg, a poster reading, “I’m Still a Goonie, How ‘Bout You?” This memento symbolizes not only Astin’s connection to the film but also Spielberg’s lasting appreciation for the story. Moreover, Astin hinted at the exciting prospect of a sequel, a dream long harbored by many fans and recently confirmed by Warner Bros.

The audition’s outcome demonstrated the potential of perseverance and mentorship, with Sean Astin’s journey offering timeless lessons in resilience and determination. As anticipation builds for the sequel, the legacy of “The Goonies” continues to resonate, mirroring the ongoing impact the film has had on audiences and actors alike.
