Sonequa Martin-Green Cast as Lead Detective in Boston Blue, Blue Bloods Spinoff Adds New Family Drama

Sonequa Martin-Green has been chosen to star as detective Lena Peters in “Boston Blue,” the eagerly awaited CBS spinoff of “Blue Bloods,” scheduled to debut as part of the network’s 2025-2026 lineup. Announced in Los Angeles at a CBS press briefing on Wednesday, Martin-Green will portray the eldest daughter in a distinguished law enforcement family, joining Donnie Wahlberg, who reprises his role as Danny Reagan from the original series. This announcement marks a significant moment for fans anticipating the next chapter in the “Blue Bloods” universe, with fresh family drama and new dynamics on the horizon.

According to CBS, Sonequa Martin-Green’s detective Lena Peters will be partnered with Danny Reagan, setting the stage for compelling narratives and complex relationships both inside and outside the police precinct. Wahlberg, who serves as an executive producer on “Boston Blue,” commented on the casting at the event. He emphasized the importance of Martin-Green’s selection by stating she was

“not the first choice — the only choice”

for the pivotal lead detective role.

Martin-Green expressed her enthusiasm for joining the celebrated Reagan family universe and beginning the journey of a new law enforcement legacy.

“We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long,”

she shared, referencing the central family of the original series.

“And I feel that we’ll love the Peters too. I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in a CBS family — and in this family, your family. It means a lot, and I’m grateful for it. I think we’re going to have a good time.”

Wahlberg further noted the impact of “Blue Bloods” and how the new show will build on its legacy, explaining,

“There are so many law enforcement families in this country. There’s not just the Reagans… There are other families around that have stories to tell too. Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family. You can’t have Danny without Reagans — there’ll be connective tissue. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.”

Sonequa Martin-Green is widely recognized for her roles as Michael Burnham in “Star Trek: Discovery” and Sasha Williams in “The Walking Dead.” Her career includes appearances in series such as “The Good Wife,” “Once Upon a Time,” “New Girl,” and most recently the film “My Dead Friend Zoe.”

“Boston Blue” is led by showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, known for their work on “S.W.A.T.,” with executive production from Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg. The series is produced by CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, continuing a partnership that began in 2017. The new show was officially greenlit this February following the 2024 cancellation of “Blue Bloods” after 14 seasons.

The casting of Sonequa Martin-Green signals a dynamic evolution for the franchise, promising both continuity and fresh stories for audiences. With beloved characters returning and new family legacies unfolding, “Boston Blue” is poised to attract devoted fans of the original series as well as newcomers interested in compelling drama and layered characters. As anticipation builds, all eyes turn to how Martin-Green’s detective Peters and her family will leave their mark on the iconic legacy of “Blue Bloods.”
