Anastacia Bio
Anastacia Lyn Newkirk, known mononymously as Anastacia, is an American singer-songwriter born on September 17, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois. She rose to international prominence in the early 2000s with her debut album Not That Kind and the global hit single “I’m Outta Love,” and across her career she has released eight studio albums and sold over 50 million records worldwide, earning numerous gold and platinum certifications. Recognized for her powerful, distinctive voice and her self-described musical style “sprock,” a fusion of soul, pop, and rock, Anastacia has enjoyed major commercial success across Europe, Oceania, Asia, Africa, and South America. Her career has been interrupted by serious health challenges, including two diagnoses of breast cancer, and she founded the Anastacia Fund to promote breast cancer awareness among younger women.
Known affectionately as “the little lady with the big voice,” Anastacia has built a reputation for self-written, autobiographical songs that often carry messages of empowerment. Beyond music, she has pursued work in fashion, television, stage musicals, and philanthropy, and she currently resides in Denver, Colorado.
Early Life and Background
Anastacia was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 17, 1968, the second of three children. She grew up in a creative household: her mother, Diane Hurley, was a Broadway actress of Irish descent, and her father, Robert Newkirk, of German descent, was a singer who performed in East Coast clubs and later suffered from bipolar disorder. Her mother’s passion for Russian literature inspired the choice of her unusual first name. Anastacia’s childhood took a difficult turn when her father abandoned the family and divorced her mother when Anastacia was only seven years old.
At the age of 13, she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, an experience she has described as transformative and formative. Around that time she developed interests in archaeology and psychology, and at 15 she moved with her mother, sister, and autistic brother to the West Side of Manhattan, living in a small one-bedroom apartment while her mother briefly pursued a Broadway career. She attended Manhattan’s Professional Children’s School, where she was a classmate of River Phoenix, Christian Slater, Ricki Lake, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. She graduated with difficulty due to dyslexia, and her vocal improvisations and extraordinary voice earned her the nickname “freak of nature,” a label that came first from her mother.
Before finding success in music, Anastacia worked a string of jobs, including as an aerobics instructor, secretary, hairdresser, sales assistant, cashier, waitress, and pastry shop employee. She also explored an early interest in child psychology before settling on music as her “third choice.”
Path to Music
In 1983, Anastacia began her career as a dancer at the New York club 1018, where she discovered house music and freestyle dance. In 1990, she started her musical career singing at weddings and working as a backing vocalist for pop star Tiffany on the album New Inside. The following year she appeared as a dancer in the music video for “My Fallen Angel” by Dominican performer Coro, with whom she had previously been romantically involved. In 1991, Steven Spielberg chose Anastacia to sing at his wedding to actress Kate Capshaw, and she went on to perform in nightclubs and casinos with various bands.
In 1993, she co-founded the Bad Yard Club with producer David Morales, a collective of producers, musicians, and singers. Despite recording the track “Forever Luv” for the album The Program, she faced repeated rejection from record labels, who struggled to market a white woman with a so-called “black” voice and who resisted pressure to conform musically. She continued singing backing vocals, including work for Jamie Foxx on his 1994 debut album Peep This and for Paula Abdul on her 1995 album Head over Heels, and from 1997 to 1999 she was a member of the funk, reggae, jazz, and R&B cover band The Kraze.
Her big break came in 1998 when she auditioned for MTV’s talent show The Cut, performing her original song “Not That Kind” and reaching the finals. Though she did not win, her performance drew interest from major labels, and in March 1999 she signed a record deal with Daylight Records, a custom label under Sony Music Entertainment’s Epic Records.
