Known for hit singles including “Summer of ’69” and “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” Adams has built a career spanning rock, pop rock, and power ballads. Beyond music, he has established himself as a respected photographer and a long-time philanthropist through The Bryan Adams Foundation.

Early Life and Background

Bryan Guy Adams was born on 5 November 1959, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Elizabeth Jane (née Watson) and Conrad J. Adams, an English couple who emigrated to Canada from Plymouth, South West England in the 1950s. His father was a British Army officer who later joined the Canadian Army, worked as a United Nations peacekeeping observer, and served as a Canadian foreign service diplomat.

Because of his father’s diplomatic postings, Adams lived in several countries during his childhood, including Portugal, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. He was raised primarily in Ottawa, where he attended Colonel By Secondary School in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood. In 1974, Adams, his mother, and his younger brother Bruce moved to North Vancouver while his father was posted abroad. He later attended Argyle Secondary School and Sutherland Secondary School.

Adams showed an early interest in music, buying his first electric guitar at the age of 10 in Reading, England. He dropped out of school at 15 to pursue music, and by his mid-teens he was performing in the Vancouver music scene with bands and as a studio session singer.

Path to Music

Adams began his professional music career in the mid-1970s in the Vancouver music scene. At the age of 15, he became the vocalist for the Canadian glam rock band Sweeney Todd, replacing original vocalist Nick Gilder. With Adams on vocals, the band re-recorded the Canadian hit “Roxy Roller,” which reached number 99 on the US charts, and released their second album, If Wishes Were Horses (1977). Adams left the band at age 16.

In 1978, Adams met songwriter and former Prism drummer Jim Vallance through a mutual friend in a Vancouver musical instrument store. This began a prolific songwriting partnership that lasted through the 1980s. The pair co-wrote songs for Adams as well as for artists including Kiss, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, and Neil Diamond. In 1978, Adams signed with A&M Records for one dollar, and in 1979 he began working with Canadian manager Bruce Allen.

Bryan Adams Career

Early Career (1979-1982)

Adams’s self-titled debut album, mostly co-written with Jim Vallance, was released in February 1980. Although its singles did not reach the US Billboard Hot 100, the album was eventually certified gold in Canada in 1986. His second album, You Want It You Got It, was released in 1981 and contained the FM rock radio hit “Lonely Nights,” which reached number three on the US Album Rock Tracks chart.

From January to May 1982, Adams toured in support of the album, opening for the Kinks and Foreigner. During this period, he built a strong live following in North America, setting the stage for his breakthrough in the years that followed.

Breakthrough (1983-1991)

Adams’s third album, Cuts Like a Knife, was released in January 1983 and marked his commercial breakthrough. Its lead single, “Straight from the Heart,” reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the title track climbed to number 15. The album peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 and achieved triple platinum status in Canada.

The 1984 album Reckless cemented Adams’s global stardom. It reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Album Chart, and produced six Top 15 US singles, including “Run to You,” “Heaven” (a US number one), “Summer of ’69,” and “One Night Love Affair.” Reckless became the first album by a Canadian artist to be certified Diamond in Canada and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Adams won the Juno Award for Best Male Vocalist every year from 1983 to 1987, and the album earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Rock Performance.

In 1991, Adams released “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” written in collaboration with Robert John “Mutt” Lange and Michael Kamen for the soundtrack of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The single spent 16 consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart and seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, eventually selling more than 15 million copies worldwide. It appeared on the album Waking Up the Neighbours (1991), which topped charts around the world and sold 16 million copies. That album also featured “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started,” a Canadian number one and US number two hit.
