Dua Lipa, born 22 August 1995, in London, England, is an English singer and songwriter whose work has helped bring disco and dance-pop textures back to mainstream music. She is the eldest child of Kosovo Albanian parents Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, and she holds citizenship in the United Kingdom, Albania, and Kosovo. Lipa has earned seven Brit Awards and three Grammy Awards, and she is widely regarded as one of the defining pop voices of her generation.

After signing with Warner Bros. Records in 2014, Lipa released her self-titled debut album in 2017, followed by the critically acclaimed Future Nostalgia in 2020 and Radical Optimism in 2024. Beyond music, she has built a noted presence in fashion, philanthropy, and film, making her acting debut in the 2023 feature Barbie. Early Life and Background

Dua Lipa was born on 22 August 1995 in London, England, the eldest child of Kosovo Albanian parents Anesa, née Rexha, and Dukagjin Lipa, both originally from Pristina in what is now Kosovo. She has a younger sister, Rina, and a younger brother, Gjin. Her grandmother suggested the name Dua, which means love in Albanian, and her maternal grandmother is of Bosniak descent. Her father’s ancestry can be traced back to the city of Peja, and both of her grandfathers worked as historians.

Lipa grew up in West Hampstead, London, and attended Fitzjohn’s Primary School, where her music lessons included the cello. She began singing at the age of five and started weekend singing lessons at the Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was nine. Her father, the lead singer and guitarist of the Kosovan rock band Oda, played a strong role in shaping her musical taste at home, exposing her to artists such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Sting, the Police, and Stereophonics.

When Kosovo declared independence in 2008, Lipa moved with her family to Pristina, where she attended Mileniumi i Tretë School, deepened her command of the Albanian language, and began seriously considering a music career. At the age of fifteen, she returned alone to London, passed her A-Levels at Parliament Hill School, and re-entered the Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time while uploading covers to SoundCloud and YouTube. She later signed with a modelling agency and appeared in a 2013 ITV advertisement for The X Factor, covering Sister Sledge’s Lost in Music, which helped her secure a producer and a manager.

Path to Music

In 2013, while working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, Dua Lipa signed with TaP Management, directed by Ben Mawson and Ed Millett, after being introduced to the firm by her lawyer. During one of her early studio sessions she co-wrote the song Hotter than Hell, which led directly to her signing a record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 2014. Her early management and label arrangement gave her the focus and freedom to develop her songwriting voice while still a teenager.

Lipa released her debut single, New Love, in August 2015, followed shortly by Be the One, which became a European hit, reaching number one in Belgium, Poland, and Slovakia. Dua Lipa’s debut studio album, Dua Lipa, was released on 2 June 2017 and peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart. The album spawned a string of international singles, including Be the One, IDGAF, and the breakthrough track New Rules, which became her first UK number-one single and the first by a female solo artist to top the UK chart since Adele’s Hello in 2015. By the end of 2017, Spotify had named Lipa the most-streamed woman of the year in the United Kingdom.

At the 2018 Brit Awards, she received nominations in five categories, more than any other artist that year, and won British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. Her collaboration with Calvin Harris, One Kiss, topped the UK Singles Chart for eight consecutive weeks and became the best-selling song of 2018 in the United Kingdom. Since January 2024, Lipa has been in a relationship with British actor Callum Turner, and the couple announced their engagement during her July 2025 British Vogue cover story.
