Dwayne Johnson Bio

Dwayne Douglas Johnson (born May 2, 1972), also known by his ring name “The Rock,” is an American actor and professional wrestler. He performs for WWE on a part-time basis and is widely regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. He wrestled for the World Wrestling Federation full-time for eight years before moving into acting.

His films have grossed over $14.9 billion worldwide, placing him among the highest-grossing actors in film history. Beyond acting and wrestling, Johnson is a producer, a co-founder of Seven Bucks Productions, and a co-owner of the United Football League.

Early Life and Background

Dwayne Douglas Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. He is the son of professional wrestler Rocky Johnson and Ata Fitisemanu. Through his mother, Johnson is a non-blood relative of the Anoa’i wrestling family and is of Samoan heritage. His father and Tony Atlas became the first Black tag team champions in WWE history in 1983, and Johnson’s maternal grandfather, Peter Maivia, was also a professional wrestler.

Johnson moved several times during his childhood, attending schools in Charlotte, North Carolina; Hamden, Connecticut; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from Freedom High School in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania, in 1990. At Freedom High School, Johnson initially struggled and was drawn into conflict, but football coach Jody Cwik recruited him to the football team, a move that marked a significant personal transformation.

After high school, Johnson accepted a full athletic scholarship to play football at the University of Miami as a defensive tackle. He was a member of the 1991 national championship team, though he largely played in backup roles. In 1995, he graduated with a Bachelor of General Studies and a dual major in criminology and physiology.

Path to Acting

Following his college career, Johnson signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League but was cut two months into the 1995 season. With his football prospects closed, he turned to professional wrestling in 1996, with his father Rocky Johnson helping him secure a World Wrestling Federation contract.

Johnson made his televised wrestling debut in 1996 under the ring name Rocky Maivia. He won the Intercontinental Championship in February 1997 and later reinvented himself as “The Rock,” a charismatic persona that helped define the WWF’s Attitude Era. His popularity as a wrestling performer eventually opened the door to Hollywood, beginning with television appearances on shows such as That ’70s Show and Star Trek: Voyager.

In 2001, Johnson made his theatrical debut in The Mummy Returns. The film’s commercial success led to his first leading role in the spin-off The Scorpion King (2002). He was paid $5.5 million for that role, earning a Guinness World Record for the highest salary for a first-time leading man.
