Early Life and Background
Henry Ewan Golding was born on 5 February 1987 in the town of Betong, located in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. His mother, Margaret Likan, is a Malaysian of Iban ancestry, and his father, Clive Golding, is English. The couple had met in Brunei, where Margaret was working as an au pair for an expatriate family and Clive was serving in the British Army’s Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. They married a few months later and eventually settled in the United Kingdom before returning to live in Sarawak.
For nearly five years, the family lived in the district of Dungun, in the Malaysian state of Terengganu, where Clive worked as a helicopter engineer. When Golding was eight years old, the family moved to the countryside of Surrey, England, and he attended The Warwick School in the town of Redhill. At school, he was bullied on the playground for coming from Asia, an experience that shaped his sense of identity from a young age. After finishing his schooling, he spent several years working as a hairdresser on Sloane Street in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Golding moved back to Malaysia at the age of 21, hoping to find on-camera work in Kuala Lumpur. He holds British citizenship and is the youngest of three children, with an older sister and an older brother.
Path to Acting
Before stepping in front of movie cameras, Golding built his early career as a television presenter in Asia. He began working as an on-camera host in 2008, presenting a weekly football show for ESPN, as well as The Travel Show for the BBC and the documentary series Surviving Borneo for Discovery Channel Asia. These hosting roles gave him valuable on-camera experience and exposure to international production teams.
His big break into feature films came in March 2017, when he was cast in Crazy Rich Asians after a global search for the film’s leading man. He was first brought to director Jon M. Chu’s attention by accountant Lisa-Kim Ling Kuan, and his charm and personality helped him secure his first major acting role alongside actress Constance Wu. The film was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States and Canada on 15 August 2018, opening at number one in theatres and earning strong critical praise.
The success of Crazy Rich Asians opened the door to a string of high-profile projects, including the thriller A Simple Favor in 2018 and the romantic comedy Last Christmas in 2019, both directed by Paul Feig. He also joined the cast of Guy Ritchie’s crime film The Gentlemen in 2019, sharing the screen with Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, and Michelle Dockery.
