Matthew David McConaughey (born November 4, 1969) is an American actor whose career has spanned romantic comedies, historical dramas, and biographical films. He first gained wide attention with a memorable supporting turn in Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age film Dazed and Confused (1993) before becoming a leading man in the legal drama A Time to Kill (1996). He later won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club (2013).

Over more than three decades, McConaughey has built a reputation for reinventing himself, moving from Hollywood heartthrob to a serious dramatic performer, a transition critics dubbed the “McConaissance.” He is also an author, philanthropist, and professor of practice at the University of Texas at Austin.

Matthew David McConaughey was born on November 4, 1969, in Uvalde, Texas. He has Irish heritage, particularly from the County Cavan and County Monaghan area. His mother, Mary Kathleen McCabe, was a published author and a former kindergarten teacher originally from Trenton, New Jersey. His father, James Donald McConaughey, was born in Mississippi in 1929, raised in Louisiana, and ran an oil pipe supply business. His father had also played college football for the Kentucky Wildcats and the Houston Cougars and was briefly selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 1953 NFL draft before being released.
