Isaac “Ike” Barinholtz (born February 18, 1977) is an American actor and comedian known for his versatility across television and film. He began his screen career on MADtv (2002–2007) and has since starred in and contributed to a wide range of projects, including The Mindy Project (2012–2017), Eastbound and Down (2012), Bless the Harts (2019–2021), The Afterparty (2022), History of the World, Part II (2023), and The Studio (2025–present). Barinholtz has appeared in hit films such as Disaster Movie (2008), Neighbors (2014) and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Snatched (2017), Blockers (2018), Late Night (2019), The Hunt (2020), and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022). He co-wrote Central Intelligence (2016) and directed The Oath (2018). He has earned accolades including a Critics’ Choice Award for The Studio and has competed on game shows like Celebrity Jeopardy! and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Early Life and Background

Ike Barinholtz was born on February 18, 1977, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, the son of Peggy and Alan Barinholtz. His father worked as an attorney and actor, and his parents were described as liberal people with great senses of humor, creating a household filled with laughter that shaped his comedic sensibilities. His brother Jon Barinholtz also became an actor, and the two siblings would later collaborate professionally.

Barinholtz attended Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School and then The Latin School of Chicago for high school. During his time at The Latin School, he played on the school’s Scholastic Bowl team when it won the state championship in 1994, and he also competed in the 1994 Texaco Star National Academic Championship held at Rice University. He worked various jobs before starting a career in comedy, including telemarketing and working as a busboy. Barinholtz is Jewish by background.

After attending Boston University, Barinholtz dropped out and worked for the Chicago Transit Authority before pursuing comedy full time. He was inspired to pursue comedy after attending a show at The Vic Theatre and subsequently took classes at The Second City, ImprovOlympic, and Annoyance Theatre. Originally planning to become a politician, he changed course and decided to move to Los Angeles to become an actor instead.

Path to Celebrity

Before achieving mainstream success, Barinholtz spent two years in Amsterdam with the famed comedy troupe Boom Chicago, working alongside future stars including Jordan Peele, Josh Meyers, and Nicole Parker. He was a founding member of The Lindbergh Babies, an improv group directed by Del Close, who had previously worked with comedy legends John Belushi, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, and Chris Farley.

Barinholtz officially joined the cast of MADtv in 2002 as a featured performer for the eighth season. He was later promoted to repertory performer status the following season. On the sketch comedy show, he often paired with Josh Meyers in various sketches, similar to the famous duos on Saturday Night Live, and also worked with Bobby Lee in later seasons. After leaving MADtv, Barinholtz continued building his comedy credentials through live performances. In 2009, he performed at the Chicago Improv Festival alongside former MADtv cast member Jordan Peele, and he returned in 2012 to perform with his brother Jon. He earned $1,000,000 for his charity, Pacific Clinics, and became the first celebrity champion to receive a berth to the Tournament of Champions due to rule changes. He later competed in the 2024 Tournament of Champions, winning his quarterfinal match before losing in the semifinals.

In April 2020, Barinholtz had previously won $125,000 for his charity, Uplift Family Services, on a special edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. To date, he is the eleventh highest-earning game show contestant of all time, having accumulated $1,835,000 across his game show appearances.
