James Blunt Bio
James Hillier Blount (born 22 February 1974), known professionally as James Blunt, is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He first found wide recognition after leaving the British Army and releasing his debut album Back to Bedlam (2004), which produced the global hit singles “You’re Beautiful” and “Goodbye My Lover”. The album sold millions worldwide and established him as a major pop-rock artist.
Over the course of his career, James Blunt has released multiple studio albums, sold over 20 million records, and received honours that include two Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, five Grammy nominations and an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Bristol.
Early Life and Background
James Hillier Blount was born on 22 February 1974 at Tidworth Camp military hospital in Hampshire, England. His mother, Jane Ann Farran (née Amos), later started a ski chalet company in the French Alpine resort of Méribel, while his father, Charles Blount, was a cavalry officer in the 13th/18th Royal Hussars who went on to become a helicopter pilot and colonel in the Army Air Corps. He is the first of three children, with two sisters, and the family has a long history of military service stretching back to the tenth-century arrival of Danish ancestors in England.
Because of his father’s postings, James Blunt moved every two years while growing up, living in St Mary Bourne, Middle Wallop, Netheravon and York in England, as well as in Nicosia, Cyprus, and Soest, Germany. He spent additional time in Cley-next-the-Sea, where his father owned the Cley Windmill. Blunt was educated at Elstree School and then at Harrow School, where he took A-levels in physics, chemistry and economics. He was introduced to the electric guitar at age 14 by a fellow student at Harrow.
Following school, James Blunt attended the University of Bristol, where he studied Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering and Sociology, graduating in 1996 with a BSc (Hons). His undergraduate dissertation, titled “The Commodification of Image – Production of a Pop Idol”, drew on the work of sociologist and rock critic Simon Frith. Sponsored through university on an army bursary, Blunt was required to serve a minimum of four years in the armed forces after graduation.
Path to Music
James Blunt trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as part of intake 963 and was commissioned into the Life Guards, a Household Cavalry regiment primarily based at Combermere Barracks. He rose to the rank of captain and, in 1998, his regiment spent six months at British Army Training Unit Suffield in Alberta, Canada, acting as the opposing force in combat training exercises. He left the British Army on 1 October 2002 having served six years.
While still serving, James Blunt began writing songs during his time off and would sometimes perform for locals and troops with a guitar strapped to the outside of his tank. A backing vocalist and songwriting collaborator put him in touch with Elton John’s manager, Todd Interland, who listened to Blunt’s demo while driving home, pulled over after hearing “Goodbye My Lover”, and called the mobile number written on the CD to set up a meeting. Shortly after leaving the army, Blunt signed with EMI Music Publishers and Twenty-First Artists management.
Adopting the stage name “James Blunt” partly to make his surname easier to spell, he secured a recording contract with Linda Perry’s Custard Records after she heard his promotional tape in London and saw him perform live at the South by Southwest Music Festival in early 2003. A month later he travelled to Los Angeles to meet producer Tom Rothrock, beginning the collaboration that would shape his debut record.
James Blunt Career
Early Career (2003–2006)
James Blunt recorded Back to Bedlam in 2003 with Tom Rothrock as producer at Conway Recording Studios and at Rothrock’s home studio in Los Angeles, playing many of the instruments himself. During the sessions he lodged with actress Carrie Fisher, who helped name the album and let him record “Goodbye My Lover” in her bathroom. The album was released in the United Kingdom in October 2004.
The lead single “High” initially missed the UK Top 100, but follow-up singles “Wisemen” and especially “You’re Beautiful” turned the record into a global phenomenon. “You’re Beautiful” reached number one in thirteen countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, and made James Blunt the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade. Back to Bedlam sold 11.2 million copies worldwide, topped album charts in 16 territories, sold more than three million copies in Britain and entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest-selling album in one year in the UK. In December 2009, BBC Radio 1 announced that Back to Bedlam was the biggest-selling album of the 2000s in the United Kingdom.

He performed “You’re Beautiful” at the 49th Grammy Awards in February 2007, dedicating the song to the late Ahmet Ertegün of Atlantic Records, but did not win in any of the five categories in which he had been nominated.
James Blunt’s second studio album, All the Lost Souls, was released in September 2007 and reached number one in twelve countries. The lead single “1973”, inspired by nights out at the Ibiza club Pacha, hit number one on the Billboard European Hot 100 Singles chart and was nominated for Best British Single at the 2008 Brit Awards. The album sold 4.5 million copies internationally within its first months.
