Kane Brown Bio
Kane Allen Brown (born October 21, 1993) is an American country music singer and songwriter who first built a large fan base through social media before becoming one of the most successful crossover artists in modern country music. Known for blending country storytelling with R&B influences, Brown achieved several historic firsts on the Billboard country charts and has continued to expand his audience through collaborations and pop-leaning releases. He records for RCA Nashville and, more recently, his own label 1021 Entertainment, in association with Sony Nashville.
After independently releasing the EP Closer in 2015, Brown signed with RCA Nashville and released his self-titled debut album in 2016. His second album, Experiment (2018), became his first number-one on the Billboard 200, and he has since released Mixtape, Vol. 1 (2020) and Different Man (2022). In 2021, he was named to Time magazine’s Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
Early Life and Background
Kane Allen Brown was born on October 21, 1993, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and raised in rural northwest Georgia and the Chattanooga area. He is biracial, with a white mother, Tabatha Brown, and an African-American father who is also part Cherokee. In a 2018 interview with People magazine, Brown said he did not know he was biracial until he was seven or eight years old and later faced racial bullying as a child.
His father has been incarcerated since 1996, and Brown was raised primarily by his single mother. The family experienced periods of homelessness and moved often, living in Rossville, Fort Oglethorpe, and LaFayette in Georgia before settling in Red Bank, Tennessee. As a result, Brown attended several high schools, including Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School in Fort Oglethorpe, where he sang in the choir with American Idol Season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina, as well as Red Bank, Ridgeland, and Soddy Daisy High Schools.
Brown grew up listening to country music but became interested in R&B during middle school. He returned his focus to country after nearly winning a school talent show in the eleventh grade with a rendition of Chris Young’s “Gettin’ You Home.” After graduation, he lived with his grandmother, who had also helped raise him.
Path to Music
Encouraged by the success of his school friend Lauren Alaina on American Idol, Brown auditioned for both American Idol and The X Factor USA. He was selected for The X Factor USA after an audition in 2013 but left the show when producers wanted to place him in a boy band. Following that experience, he chose to share his singing online.
In 2014, Brown began posting homemade videos of country covers on Facebook, performing songs by artists such as Brantley Gilbert, Billy Currington, and Alan Jackson. A cover of Lee Brice’s “I Don’t Dance” drew early attention, and his September 30, 2015, cover of George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” went viral, amassing more than seven million views. His Facebook following quickly surpassed one million users, and a teaser clip for his own single “Used to Love You Sober” reached one million views in less than three hours.
Brown initially signed with Zone 4 and recorded his debut EP at the Nashville home studio of Brantley Gilbert guitarist Noah Henson, raising production funds through Kickstarter. The six-song EP, Closer, was released on June 2, 2015, debuting at number 22 on the Top Country Albums chart.
