Lauren Alaina Kristine Suddeth (born November 8, 1994) is an American country singer and songwriter from Rossville, Georgia. She rose to national prominence as the runner-up on season ten of American Idol in 2011 and released her debut album Wildflower the same year. Since then, Lauren Alaina has charted multiple hits, including the country-airplay chart-topper “Road Less Traveled” and the Diamond-certified duet “What Ifs” with Kane Brown, and has built a reputation as a sought-after collaborator in country music.
A two-time CMT Music Award winner and an Academy of Country Music Award recipient, Lauren Alaina was invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 2022, marking one of country music’s crowning achievements. Early Life and Background
Lauren Alaina Kristine Suddeth was born on November 8, 1994, in Rossville, Georgia, to Kristy and Jerry Eugene “J.J.” Suddeth. Her father worked as a process technician in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the family remained rooted in the North Georgia and Chattanooga area throughout her childhood. Her parents later divorced in 2013, and both remarried; her father passed away in 2024.
Lauren Alaina discovered her passion for singing early, inspired by her cousin Holly Witherow, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. At eight years old, she entered the talent competition of the Southern Stars Pageant and won. The following year, she was selected to perform on the Kids talent stage at Chattanooga’s Riverbend Festival, returning annually until age 12, when she won the opportunity to perform on the festival’s main stage.
At ten, Lauren Alaina traveled to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the American Model and Talent Competition, where she won the event against 1,500 other children. She also sang with the Georgia Country Gospel Music Association’s children’s group and made her first trip to Nashville at age 12. Lauren Alaina’s path to country music began through pageants, talent competitions, and festival performances across the Southeast. Before auditioning for American Idol, she was rejected on America’s Got Talent twice, experiences that only strengthened her resolve. At 12, she began writing her own songs, including “Leaving” and “Set Me Free,” and by her mid-teens she was performing regularly at regional events. Prior to Idol, she worked at CiCi’s Pizza while continuing to chase her musical ambitions.
In 2011, Lauren Alaina auditioned for the tenth season of American Idol in Nashville, Tennessee. Lauren Alaina released her debut studio album, Wildflower, on October 11, 2011. The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 and number two on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, selling 69,000 copies in its first week and becoming the best-selling digital album by a debut country female. The lead single “Georgia Peaches” reached number 28 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, while her follow-up single “Eighteen Inches” peaked at number 37.
Throughout 2011 and 2012, Lauren Alaina made numerous high-profile television appearances, including performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Live with Regis and Kelly, The Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She also performed for Barack Obama and Michelle Obama in the PBS special In Performance at the White House and sang the National Anthem at the Thanksgiving Day game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. Lauren Alaina Family
Lauren Alaina was born to Kristy and Jerry Eugene “J.J.” Suddeth of Rossville, Georgia. Her parents divorced in 2013, and both later remarried. Her father was a recovering alcoholic who got sober in October 2013, and her stepfather passed away from cancer in 2018. Her father died in 2024.
Personal Life
Lauren Alaina is a Christian and has often spoken about living for Jesus Christ. Throughout her teen years, she struggled with bulimia, an experience she discussed publicly in a 2016 Rolling Stone interview, crediting music, family, and supportive friends with helping her find herself. She began dating Alexander Hopkins in 2012, and the couple became engaged in July 2018 before splitting in January 2019. She was then in a relationship with comedian John Crist for several months in 2019. In November 2022, Lauren Alaina announced her engagement to Cam Arnold, and the two married on February 4, 2024. Their daughter was born on June 11, 2025.
