Scotty McCreery was born on October 9, 1993, in Garner, North Carolina, to Judy, a real estate agent, and Michael McCreery, a manufacturing systems analyst. His parents originally planned to name him Evan but changed their minds on the way to the hospital. McCreery is of one-quarter Puerto Rican descent through his father, who was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and raised in Aberdeen, North Carolina. He grew up alongside an older sister, Ashley, in the same Garner household where he still has deep family ties.

McCreery discovered country music at a young age, reportedly receiving a book about Elvis Presley from his grandmother when he was around five or six.
