Catherine Louise Sagal, known professionally as Katey Sagal, is an American actress and singer whose career has spanned more than five decades across television, film, animation, and music. Born on January 19, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, she first rose to national prominence as Peggy Bundy on the long-running Fox sitcom Married… with Children from 1987 to 1997. She later earned widespread critical acclaim as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, winning a Golden Globe Award in 2011 for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama. Sagal is also widely recognized for voicing Leela on Futurama and continues to balance dramatic, comedic, and musical projects with ease.

Early Life and Background

Sagal was born on January 19, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, into a show business family with five children. Her mother, Sara Zwilling, worked as a singer, producer, and television writer under the stage name Sara Macon, and her father, Boris Sagal, was a television director. She grew up alongside four siblings, several of whom also pursued careers in entertainment, including her younger twin sisters Jean and Liz Sagal and her brother Joey Sagal. After her mother’s death in 1975, her father married dancer and actress Marge Champion in 1977.

Sagal and her siblings were raised in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her godfather was the influential sitcom producer and writer Norman Lear, who also introduced her parents to each other. She has described herself as culturally Jewish without formal religious experience. She graduated from Palisades High School and went on to attend the California Institute of the Arts, where she studied until 1972.

Path to Acting

Sagal began her professional career as a singer and songwriter in the early 1970s. In 1973, she worked as a backing vocalist for artists including Bob Dylan, Etta James, and Tanya Tucker. She later joined the Harlettes, Bette Midler’s backup singing group, in 1978. Her early on-screen experience included a small role as a receptionist in the 1973 Columbo installment Candidate for Crime, which was directed by her father Boris Sagal.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sagal built her résumé with guest spots, music videos, and supporting television work. She appeared in the 1986 music video for Debbie Harry’s French Kissin (in the USA) and took on her first major television role as a newspaper columnist in the series Mary (1985–86) starring Mary Tyler Moore. She has three children: a daughter, Sarah Grace, born in 1994; a son, Jackson James White, born in 1996; and a daughter, Esmé Louise, born in 2007 through a surrogate. Her siblings include actors Jean Sagal, Liz Sagal, and Joey Sagal, along with her brother David Sagal, who works as an attorney.

Personal Life

In 1991, while working on Married… with Children, Sagal experienced a late-pregnancy loss when her daughter was stillborn. The experience inspired the song (You) Can’t Hurry the Harvest, which she later recorded on her debut album Well…. Following the loss, the show’s writers chose not to incorporate her subsequent pregnancies into the storyline, instead writing around her absences.

Sagal has remained active in charitable causes, including a 2016 Human Rights Campaign tribute video honoring the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. She was also featured in a 2016 episode of the television genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?.
