Katherine LaNasa was born on December 1, 1966, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up in Baton Rouge. Her father was Dr. James J. LaNasa Jr., a surgeon. LaNasa began dancing at the age of 12, and her exceptional talent earned her admission to the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at age 14. After completing her training, she apprenticed with the Milwaukee Ballet before joining Salt Lake City's Ballet West and later the Karole Armitage Ballet.
