Kevin Jerome Gilyard was born on February 5, 1986, to a Puerto Rican mother and a Moroccan father. He and his family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, before eventually settling in Baton Rouge, where he spent much of his childhood and where he continues to live. Gates had an often tumultuous upbringing, and he was first arrested at age thirteen for being a passenger in a stolen vehicle. He lost contact with his father as a young child but later reconnected with him as a teenager, only for his father to die of complications from AIDS when Gates was fourteen.
