A few months after his birth, the family relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and when he was six, they moved to Heidelberg, West Germany, where they lived for four years.
After returning to the United States, Nealon grew up in Connecticut and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Trumbull in 1971. Nealon became a vegetarian in 1989 and has been active in the animal rights movement, supporting PETA, the Amanda Foundation, Farm Sanctuary, the Washington Wildlife Alliance, the Genesis Awards, and Meat Out. He dated fellow comedian Jan Hooks before both were hired by Saturday Night Live. He holds dual Irish and American citizenship and has played rugby for Fairfield Yankees RFC.
Outside of acting, Nealon has hosted the YouTube talk show Hiking with Kevin since 2017, in which he hikes trails with celebrity guests; in January 2025, Fox News Media announced a deal to stream episodes on Fox Nation. He is also an enthusiast of the European melodic rock scene and organized a 2019 benefit for the ailing rocker Tony Mills.
