Larenz Tate (born September 8, 1975) is an American film and television actor whose career spans more than four decades. He first gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of O-Dog in Menace II Society (1993) and went on to anchor major projects such as Dead Presidents (1995) and Why Do Fools Fall in Love (1998). In recent years, he has become widely known for playing Councilman Rashad Tate on the Starz drama Power and its sequel series Power Book II: Ghost. Beyond acting, Tate serves as a national spokesman for sickle cell disease awareness.
Early Life and Background
Larenz Tate was born on September 8, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois, to Peggy and Larry Tate. He is of African American heritage and the youngest of three brothers; his two older siblings, Larron and Lahmard Tate, are also actors. During the early 1980s, the Tate family relocated to California, where the brothers would eventually grow up together.
The siblings were encouraged by their parents to enroll in a drama program at the Inner City Cultural Center. At first, the boys did not take the classes seriously, but everything changed when their classmate Malcolm-Jamal Warner rose to fame after being cast on the hit sitcom The Cosby Show. Inspired by Warner’s success, the Tate brothers began pursuing small acting roles with renewed focus. In 1985, Larenz made his small-screen debut in an episode of The New Twilight Zone. He later attended Palmdale High School in California, graduating in 1993.
Path to Acting
Tate’s earliest television work came through guest spots on popular series, including 21 Jump Street and The Wonder Years. He soon landed the role of Steve Urkel’s nemesis, Willie Fuffner, in the long-running sitcom Family Matters. In Ray, he portrayed music producer Quincy Jones, the very same producer behind The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episode in which Tate had earlier appeared. He also starred as Bart “Black Shawn” Johnston in seasons four through seven of FX’s Rescue Me and appeared in series such as House of Lies and The Mindy Project.
