Liam Payne Bio
Liam James Payne (29 August 1993 – 16 October 2024) was an English singer and songwriter. He first became known to global audiences as a member of the pop group One Direction, the five-piece band formed on the British television series The X Factor in 2010. After the group began an indefinite hiatus in 2016, Payne launched a solo career, signing with Republic Records in North America and releasing the hit single “Strip That Down” in 2017. His debut and only solo studio album, LP1, followed in December 2019. Payne also worked as a producer under the names Payno and Big Payno, and he was active in charity work, fashion partnerships and digital art ventures throughout his career.
Early Life and Background
Liam James Payne was born on 29 August 1993 at New Cross Hospital in the Heath Town district of Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands of England. He was the son of infant nurse Karen Payne and fitter Geoff Payne, and he grew up with two older sisters named Nicola and Ruth. Payne was born three weeks premature and suffered frequent illnesses as a child. Doctors discovered that one of his kidneys was scarred and not working properly, and before the age of four he required 32 injections each morning and evening as part of his treatment.
As a student, Payne became heavily involved in sports, particularly cross-country running, and he joined the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club to pursue the discipline. He began boxing lessons at age 12 after being bullied by older students at secondary school. Payne completed 11 GCSEs at St Peter’s Collegiate School and went on to study music technology at the City of Wolverhampton College. He was introduced to performing at age 12 through the Pink Productions Theatre Company, where he played Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever, and he had earlier sung in front of 26,000 fans at a Wolverhampton Wanderers football match.
Path to Singing
Payne’s first major break came in 2008, when he auditioned for the fifth series of The X Factor at the age of 14. He advanced past the first round with Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” but was cut at the boot camp stage before Simon Cowell reversed the decision and invited him to the judges’ houses. After being eliminated again, Cowell encouraged him to return in two years. Payne heeded the advice and came back to the show in 2010, where he performed Michael Bublé’s version of “Cry Me a River” for judges Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh and guest judge Natalie Imbruglia.
During the 2010 boot camp stage, Payne was grouped with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik to form the boy band One Direction for the competition’s “Groups” category. The group finished third on the show and, in January 2011, signed with Cowell’s Syco Entertainment label. Within months, One Direction released the UK number one single “What Makes You Beautiful” and their debut album Up All Night, launching a global career that established Payne as one of the best-selling pop artists of his generation.
