Lil Durk Bio
Durk Devontay Banks (born October 19, 1992), known professionally as Lil Durk, is an American rapper and songwriter. He is regarded as one of the most commercially successful artists in Chicago drill music and the founder of the Chicago-based collective and record label Only the Family (OTF), which he established in 2010. Known by several nicknames including The Voice, Smurk, and Durkio, he first rose to attention with his Signed to the Streets mixtape series between 2013 and 2014 and has since built a chart-topping solo catalog. In 2024 he won his first Grammy Award, for Best Melodic Rap Performance, for the single “All My Life” featuring J. Cole.
Early Life and Background
Durk Devontay Banks was born on October 19, 1992, in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. His father was incarcerated when Durk was seven months old, and he has spoken about periods during his youth when there was not enough food at home. He attended Paul Robeson High School in Chicago, where he left school and joined the Black Disciples street gang before pursuing music full-time.
During his teenage years, Banks began building a presence on social media platforms such as Myspace and YouTube, where he developed a growing online audience. He became a father at age 17, an experience he has said pushed him to take his career more seriously. He soon faced legal trouble and was sentenced in October 2011 on gun charges, including possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated unauthorized use of a weapon and did not serve additional time.
Path to Rapper
Banks began releasing music in 2010 with a freestyle titled “Lamron Wasted” and the single “L’s Bitch” featuring Lil Reese, after which he decided to pursue rapping as a full-time career. After plans to sign with Chief Keef and French Montana fell through, he released two more singles, “Sneak Dissin’” and “I’ma Hitta,” which received positive feedback in Chicago and led to his first mixtapes: I’m A Hitta (2011), I’m Still A Hitta (2012), and Life Ain’t No Joke (2012).
In December 2012 he released “L’s Anthem,” and its success, along with the follow-up single “Dis Ain’t What U Want,” helped him secure a joint venture with his Only the Family collective and Def Jam Recordings in 2013. The signing marked his formal transition from a local Chicago artist to a nationally recognized rapper, setting the stage for the Signed to the Streets mixtape series that would make his name.
