Matt LeBlanc Bio
Matthew Steven LeBlanc (born July 25, 1967) is an American actor and producer who first rose to worldwide prominence as Joey Tribbiani on the NBC sitcom Friends (1994–2004). He carried the character into the spin-off series Joey (2004–2006) and later earned a Golden Globe Award for playing a fictionalized version of himself on the BBC/Showtime comedy Episodes (2011–2017). LeBlanc also co-hosted the BBC’s Top Gear from 2016 to 2019 and starred as the patriarch Adam Burns on the CBS sitcom Man with a Plan from 2016 to 2020.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, LeBlanc moved to New York as a teenager to pursue modeling before pivoting to acting. Over the course of a career that began in 1987, he has earned multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, several Golden Globe nominations, and the loyalty of television audiences around the world.
Early Life and Background
Matthew Steven LeBlanc was born at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts. His mother, Patricia LeBlanc, worked as an office manager, and his father, Paul LeBlanc, was a mechanic and a Vietnam War veteran. He has a brother named Justin LeBlanc. His father is of French-Canadian descent, while his mother is of Italian ancestry, the daughter of immigrants from Arce in the Lazio region of Italy.
LeBlanc attended Newton North High School in Massachusetts, graduating in the same class as the future comedian Louis C.K. He then enrolled at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston but dropped out shortly after beginning his second semester, choosing to chase a different kind of education on his own.
At the age of 17, LeBlanc moved to New York to try his hand at modeling, only to be told he was too short for the industry. His acting career began unexpectedly when a woman invited him to accompany her to an audition, and he ended up being signed by her manager.
Path to Celebrity
LeBlanc’s first on-screen appearance came in a 1987 Heinz Tomato Ketchup commercial. In 1988, he landed a role in the television drama TV 101 for a single season. The following years brought recurring work, including the role of Vinnie Verducci on the Fox sitcom Married… with Children in 1991, as well as the short-lived spin-offs Top of the Heap (1991) and Vinnie & Bobby (1992). He also appeared in the first season of Red Shoe Diaries and in music videos for Bon Jovi, Alanis Morissette, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Bob Seger.
By the early 1990s, LeBlanc had booked a steady stream of commercials and small parts, but he was reportedly down to his last eleven dollars before landing the audition that would change his life. That audition was for a new NBC ensemble comedy then still in development, and his read for the role of Joey Tribbiani would help launch one of the most-watched sitcoms in television history.
Matt LeBlanc Career
Early Career (1987–1994)
Between 1987 and 1994, LeBlanc built a resume of small television roles, music-video appearances, and pilot projects. His early credits included the 1987 Heinz commercial, the 1988 drama TV 101, a recurring run on Married… with Children, and guest spots on Red Shoe Diaries. He also filmed two short-lived Married… with Children spin-offs, Top of the Heap and Vinnie & Bobby, both of which gave him valuable on-camera experience even though neither series lasted long.
During this period, LeBlanc also branched into music videos, appearing in Bon Jovi’s “Miracle” from the Young Guns II soundtrack and in the band’s later clip “Say It Isn’t So,” as well as in videos for Alanis Morissette, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Bob Seger. These early jobs sharpened his screen presence and helped him land a meeting with the casting directors of a brand-new NBC comedy.
Breakthrough (1994–2006)
LeBlanc found career-defining success as the charming but dim-witted actor Joey Tribbiani on Friends, playing the character for twelve years across ten seasons of Friends and two seasons of the spin-off Joey. The Thursday-night ensemble comedy became a global phenomenon, and LeBlanc, alongside co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, became a household name.
For his performance as Joey, LeBlanc received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, three Golden Globe Award nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. During this peak era he also appeared in films including Lookin’ Italian (1994), Ed (1996), Lost in Space (1998), Charlie’s Angels (2000), and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003).
Following the cancellation of Joey in 2006, LeBlanc announced a one-year hiatus from television acting that eventually stretched to five years.
