Early Life and Background
Matt Reeves was born on April 27, 1966, in Rockville Centre, New York, on Long Island. He is the son of George C. Reeves Jr., a lawyer, Hollywood business executive, writer, and producer. When he was five years old, his family moved to Los Angeles, where he spent the rest of his childhood.
Reeves discovered his love of filmmaking at a young age. He made his first film at the age of eight, directing his friends with a wind-up camera. At 13, he met and befriended J. J. Abrams, who would also become a noted filmmaker. A Los Angeles public-access television channel, Z Channel, began airing their short films, and when they were 15 or 16 years old, Steven Spielberg hired them to transfer some of his own Super 8 films to videotape.
Path to Director
Reeves attended the University of Southern California, where he studied screenwriting under writer Jeph Loeb. Between 1991 and 1992, he produced a student film titled Mr. Petrified Forest, which won an award and helped him land an agent. He also co-wrote a script that was eventually developed as the action film Under Siege 2: Dark Territory.
Reeves’s student film Mr. Petrified Forrest later made its debut in the horror anthology film Future Shock (1994). He made his official directorial debut with the romantic comedy The Pallbearer (1996), which co-starred Gwyneth Paltrow and David Schwimmer. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, marking an early sign of his arrival in the industry.

Following his debut with The Pallbearer, Reeves moved into television, where he co-created and showran the WB drama series Felicity alongside J. J. Abrams. The series ran for 84 episodes from 1998 to 2002, and Reeves directed several episodes, including the pilot. He also directed episodes of series such as Relativity, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Gideon’s Crossing, building a steady resume as a hands-on director in both film and television.
During this period, Reeves continued developing feature projects, including the script that became Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. His television work on Felicity established him as a reliable creative partner to Abrams and helped lay the groundwork for his later move into large-scale filmmaking.

Reeves gained international recognition for directing the science-fiction monster film Cloverfield (2008), which was produced by J. J. Abrams. The found-footage style of the film made it a major hit. He later served as an executive producer on 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), helping expand the franchise beyond his own directorial work.
In September 2008, Reeves was hired to write and direct the vampire film Let Me In, an English-language adaptation of the 2004 novel Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist and a remake of the 2008 Swedish film. Co-produced with Hammer Films, the movie was released in the United States on October 1, 2010, by Overture Films.
Reeves was then brought on by 20th Century Fox to direct the science-fiction film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The film was a commercial and critical success and led to Reeves signing a three-year production deal with 20th Century Fox. He returned to write and direct the third film in the series, War for the Planet of the Apes, which was released on July 14, 2017.
In January 2018, Reeves moved his production deal to Netflix, signing an exclusive first-look film deal with the company under his 6th & Idaho production banner. He also executive produced the Fox science-fiction thriller series The Passage and the Amazon Prime Video science-fiction drama series Tales from the Loop, which premiered in April 2020 to positive reviews.

In August 2022, he signed a multi-year first-look film and television deal with Warner Bros. Pictures.
In February 2017, Reeves was hired to direct and produce a Batman film, titled The Batman, which would become part of the DC Extended Universe. He took over the position from Ben Affleck, opting to retool the film to separate it from the DCEU and focus on a younger incarnation of the character. Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, and principal photography began in January 2020. Premiering in London on February 23, 2022, The Batman was released theatrically on March 4, 2022, starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne.
