Pusha T Bio
Terrence LeVarr Thornton, known professionally as Pusha T, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record executive who has shaped modern hip-hop through his sharp lyricism, street-rooted storytelling, and influential role behind the scenes. Across more than three decades in music, Pusha T has built a catalog of critically acclaimed solo albums, served as president of GOOD Music, and founded his own label, Heir Wave Music Group, in 2020.
Known by nicknames including Terrar and King Push, he has released four solo studio albums, with It’s Almost Dry (2022) becoming his first to debut atop the Billboard 200. He has earned one Grammy Award from eleven nominations and remains one of the most respected voices in rap, recognized for his incisive wordplay and high-profile collaborations and feuds within hip-hop.
Early Life and Background
Pusha T was born Terrence LeVarr Thornton on May 13, 1977, in the Bronx borough of New York City to parents Gene Thornton and Mildred Thornton. The family soon relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he and his older brother, Gene Thornton Jr., grew up. The brothers came of age in a region whose coastal, mid-Atlantic environment would later inform much of Pusha T’s musical identity and visual language.
As teenagers, the Thornton brothers both sold drugs, with Gene eventually being kicked out of their parents’ house after they discovered what he was doing. Despite these challenges, the brothers remained close and channeled their experiences into music, ultimately forming the hip-hop duo Clipse. Their early environment and street experiences provided a foundation for the unflinching narratives that would later define Pusha T’s solo work.
Path to Music
In 1992, alongside his brother, Pusha T began to pursue a career in hip hop, forming Clipse, originally known as Terrar and Malicious. Shortly after forming the group, the brothers were introduced to record producer and fellow Virginian Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes, who helped them secure a recording contract with Elektra Records in 1997. Pusha T initially took the stage name Terrar before later adopting the name Pusha T after the duo was dropped from the label.
After being released from Elektra, Pusha T made numerous guest appearances on tracks produced by The Neptunes, including Kelis’s 1999 single “Good Stuff” and Nivea’s 2001 single “Run Away (I Wanna Be with U).” In early 2001, Pharrell Williams signed the duo to Arista Records through his Star Trak imprint, setting the stage for Clipse’s commercial breakthrough. These formative years gave Pusha T the training and industry relationships that would anchor his transition to a solo career.

The album spawned the singles “Grindin’” and “When the Last Time,” which both reached the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40. The duo’s follow-up, Hell Hath No Fury, arrived on November 28, 2006, to significant critical acclaim and debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200, earning XXL magazine’s rare five-star rating.
After a third album, Til the Casket Drops, in 2009, Pusha T and his brother announced Clipse would go on indefinite hiatus so they could focus on solo careers. In September 2010, Pusha T was signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music label, appearing on the hit single “Runaway” and premiering it with West at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.
