Rain Joan of Arc Phoenix (born November 21, 1972) is an American actress, musician, and singer. As the older sister of Joaquin Phoenix and younger sister of the late River Phoenix, she has built a diverse career spanning film, television, and music. She began performing as a child alongside her brother River, eventually forming the band Aleka’s Attic before pursuing acting opportunities. Her film credits include My Own Private Idaho, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, and Hitch. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Phoenix actively supports charitable initiatives through her LaunchLeft platform and serves on the boards of the Lunchbox Fund and the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding.
Early Life and Background
Rain Joan of Arc Phoenix was born Rain Bottom on November 21, 1972, in Crockett, Texas. She is the second child of Arlyn Phoenix and John Lee Bottom. Her mother was born in New York to Jewish parents from Russia. Her father was from California and of mixed European heritage. Before Rain was born, her parents joined The Children of God cult and worked as missionaries in South America.
At age three, Rain began singing on the streets of Caracas, Venezuela, accompanied by her older brother River on guitar. The family eventually moved to California to give the children opportunities in the entertainment industry. In West Los Angeles, Rain and her siblings performed on streets for crowds. Their mother Arlyn took a job at NBC and secured all five Phoenix children with an agent.
Path to Actress
Rain began her entertainment career at age nine when she and her brother River performed as an audience warm-up act on the PBS show Real Kids in 1982. Various television appearances followed, including an episode of Amazing Stories in 1986, where she was sometimes credited as Rainbow Phoenix. She also appeared in an episode of Family Ties in 1987. That same year, she landed her first feature film role in Maid to Order alongside Ally Sheedy.
At age fifteen, Rain returned to her musical roots and formed the band Aleka’s Attic with her then seventeen-year-old brother River. The band secured gigs in and around their hometown of Gainesville, Florida. In 1988, Aleka’s Attic signed a development deal with Island Records. In 1989, they released the track “Across The Way” on a benefit album for the animal rights group PETA.

Early Career (1991–1993)
In 1991, Rain joined her brother River on the set of My Own Private Idaho. River suggested Rain for a role in Gus Van Sant’s upcoming film adaptation of Tom Robbins’s cult novel Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. She was cast as head cowgirl Bonanza Jellybean alongside Uma Thurman. The film marked one of her most notable acting performances.
Tragedy struck in October 1993 when her brother River died from acute multiple drug intoxication at a nightclub in West Hollywood. Rain had traveled to Los Angeles with their brother Joaquin to meet River during a break from filming Dark Blood. She dealt with the loss while managing the unfinished album Aleka’s Attic had been recording, which River had been funding. The album was never released.
Breakthrough (1994–2005)
Following River’s death, Rain channeled her energy into music and acting. In 1994, she joined R.E.M. in the studio to record backup vocals on the song “Bang and Blame,” featured on their album Monster, which was dedicated to River. She also contributed vocals to R.E.M.’s “At My Most Beautiful” music video. That same year, she joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a backup singer for their One Hot Minute tour.
In 1997, Rain formed the punk/new wave band The Causey Way with her younger sisters Summer and Liberty. The band disbanded in 2001 after releasing two albums and two EPs. Meanwhile, she continued acting with roles in I Woke Up Early the Day I Died (1998), O (2001), Harry and Max (2004), and Hitch (2005).

Rain Phoenix Music Career
In 2003, Rain formed the band Papercranes as lead singer and lyricist. Their self-titled EP was released in 2004, followed by their first album Vidalia in 2006. In 2010, Papercranes signed with Manimal Vinyl and released their second album Let’s Make Babies in the Woods in 2011. Their third and final release came in 2012 with the concept record Three. Guest musicians on various releases included Rain’s sisters Summer and Liberty, actor Dermot Mulroney, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In 2013, Rain and Frally Hynes formed the galactic country band Venus and the Moon, which included Chris Stills. They released a self-titled 7-inch double-A side vinyl in 2014 and a record titled Brother, Son in 2015, which was recorded on River’s 4-track recorder. In February 2019, Rain released her first solo single “Time Is the Killer” featuring R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. Her debut solo album River was released on Halloween 2019 via LaunchLeft.
Rain Phoenix Philanthropy
Rain has dedicated significant effort to charitable causes. Together with her brother Joaquin Phoenix, she serves on the board of directors for the Lunchbox Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides daily meals to students at township schools in Soweto, South Africa. She also serves on the board of the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, which was founded by her mother and stepfather. Additionally, she works closely with the artists charity The Art of Elysium.
In 2010, Rain created the nonprofit Gift Horse Project, which brought together well-known and emerging artists in service of charity. In 2011, Gift Horse Project released a compilation record benefiting the Lunchbox Fund, featuring contributions from artists such as Bright Eyes, Albert Hammond Jr., Cobra Starship, Joseph Arthur, and others. LaunchLeft evolved from Gift Horse Project, taking the ethos of artists helping artists into the for-profit sector. LaunchLeft has produced large events for various nonprofit organizations and now operates as a podcast hosted by Rain and Summer Phoenix.
