Vincent Kartheiser Bio
Vincent Paul Kartheiser (born May 5, 1979) is an American actor known for playing ambitious young ad executive Pete Campbell on the AMC drama series Mad Men from 2007 to 2015. He first gained notice as a teenage film actor with starring roles in Alaska (1996), Masterminds (1997), and Another Day in Paradise (1998), and later earned genre attention as Connor on The WB’s Angel and as Dr. Jonathan Crane in the third season of the HBO series Titans. Over a career that began in 1993, he has built a steady résumé spanning independent film, network television, voice work, and theater.
Early Life and Background
Vincent Paul Kartheiser was born on May 5, 1979, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the son of Janet Marie Gruyé, who ran a nursery, and James Ralph Kartheiser, who sold construction equipment. He is the youngest of six children, with four sisters named Andrea, Colette, Elise, and Theresa, and a brother named Nathan.
Kartheiser is of Luxembourgish, German, and, to a lesser extent, Polish, Finnish, and Swedish ancestry. He grew up in the Minneapolis area and attended Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota, where he began developing an interest in performing.
As a child, Kartheiser took his earliest acting steps on the stage of the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. He appeared in productions including Pippi Longstocking, Our Town, Dr. Seuss’ The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, experiences that gave him early confidence in front of an audience. He left high school at the age of 15 because, as he has said, he wanted to make money.
Path to Celebrity
Kartheiser made his screen debut with a small part in the film Untamed Heart in 1993, when he was still a teenager. He was soon cast in family-oriented projects, including The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) and a starring role in the film Alaska (1996), which was shot in difficult conditions and helped him earn notice as a young lead.
That exposure led to his first starring role as an adult in the 1997 action film Masterminds, and then to a turn as Bobby, a drug-addicted criminal, in Larry Clark’s Another Day in Paradise (1998). The role, which included explicit scenes opposite Natasha Gregson, drew significant critical attention and signaled his shift away from purely family-oriented work.
At the turn of the millennium, Kartheiser continued to build his résumé with independent projects, including the 2000 Sundance selection Crime and Punishment in Suburbia, an updated take on Dostoyevsky set in a modern high school, and the comedy Strike! (later retitled All I Wanna Do). He also returned to the stage in 2013 at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, playing Mr. Darcy in an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
Vincent Kartheiser Career
Early Career (1993–2006)
During the 1990s, Kartheiser balanced family films with edgier independent features. His 1996 lead in Alaska was followed by Masterminds in 1997 and the darker Another Day in Paradise in 1998, establishing him as a versatile young actor willing to take on complicated roles.
He continued to take risks with independent projects such as Crime and Punishment in Suburbia, which screened at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, and the coming-of-age drama Dandelion, which was shown at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. In 2002, he co-starred on the supernatural drama series Angel, playing Connor, the son of the title character, across 28 episodes and earning a devoted fan base.
Breakthrough (2007–2015)
Kartheiser’s defining role came when he was cast as Pete Campbell on Mad Men, Matthew Weiner’s period drama set in a 1960s New York advertising agency. The character, an ambitious and often insufferable young account man, became one of the show’s most talked-about figures and earned Kartheiser widespread recognition over the series’ run from 2007 to 2015.
During the Mad Men years, he also filmed his role as Fielding in the BBC’s two-part adaptation of Martin Amis’ novel Money, which began airing on BBC Two on May 23, 2010. He appeared in Andrew Niccol’s science fiction film In Time (2011) and provided a voice for the animated feature Rango (2011), the same year.
He wrote, produced, and directed the short film Fruit of Labor, which made its Orange County debut at the Newport Beach Film Festival in April 2013. He also returned to the stage that summer at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis to portray Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
