Drafted 67th overall by the Jets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, he has been a steady presence in the franchise since joining the roster in 2013. Standing 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 205 pounds, he is known for his two-way play, face-off ability, and physical presence on the ice.
Lowry was named the tenth captain in Jets franchise history on September 12, 2023, becoming the third captain since the club relocated to Winnipeg. He signed a five-year, $25 million contract extension on November 19, 2025, keeping him with the Jets through the 2030–31 season.
Early Life and Background
Adam Lowry was born on March 29, 1993, in St. Louis, Missouri, where his father, Dave Lowry, was a member of the St. Louis Blues at the time. He was raised in Calgary, Alberta, where Dave later played for the Calgary Flames and eventually served as an assistant coach for the team. Growing up in a hockey household gave Adam early and continuous exposure to the sport at its highest levels.
In 2008, Lowry was selected in the fourth round, 78th overall, by the Swift Current Broncos at the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. Although drafted into major junior, he played one more season of minor hockey with the Calgary Rangers of the Alberta Midget Hockey League to continue his development. On August 27, 2009, Lowry signed a WHL contract with the Swift Current Broncos and began his major junior career.
Path to Professional Hockey
In his rookie WHL season with the Swift Current Broncos, Lowry scored 15 goals and 34 points in 61 games as a 16-year-old and was recognized as the scholastic player of the year with the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Trophy. The following season was interrupted by a bout of mononucleosis before training camp, keeping him out of action during August and September 2010. Despite the setback, Lowry recorded 18 goals and 45 points in 66 games and was again nominated for the Seaman Trophy as the Eastern Conference representative.
Heading into the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked Lowry 58th among North American skaters, improving on his mid-season ranking of 62nd. On June 25, 2011, the Winnipeg Jets selected him in the third round, 67th overall. He finished his major junior career in 2012–13 with the Broncos and was awarded the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as WHL Player of the Year.
Adam Lowry Career
Early Career (2013–2015)
On April 4, 2013, Lowry signed an amateur tryout contract with the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League (AHL) and tallied one assist in six games before signing an entry-level deal with the Jets. He attended the Jets’ 2013 Development Camp and was reassigned to the IceCaps for his first full professional season, where he was shifted to centre and produced 17 goals and 16 assists for 33 points in 64 games. The IceCaps reached the 2014 Calder Cup Finals against the Texas Stars, who swept them in five games.
Promoted to the Jets for the 2014–15 season, Lowry opened with a spot on the third line alongside Mathieu Perreault and Dustin Byfuglien. He scored his first NHL goal on October 21, 2014, helping Winnipeg beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3–1. By January 2015, he was skating with Evander Kane and Chris Thorburn, finishing with six goals and 15 points through 48 games and 256 hits to lead the Jets. He made his NHL playoff debut on April 16, 2015, becoming the fastest rookie to score in a playoff debut in eight years.
Winnipeg Jets Breakthrough (2015–2018)
During his second NHL season, head coach Paul Maurice experimented with Lowry on the first line beside Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little. After recording eight points through 31 games, he was briefly reassigned to the Manitoba Moose before being recalled when Mark Scheifele went on injured reserve. An upper-body injury on January 14, 2016, briefly interrupted his season, but he returned to score a goal against the Dallas Stars on February 2, 2016, and later helped the Jets earn their first win when trailing after two periods. He signed a two-year, one-way contract with an average annual value of $1.125 million.
In the first year of that contract, Lowry set new career highs with 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points while playing a largely defensive role. He averaged more than two-and-a-half minutes of shorthanded ice time per game to lead all forwards in that category and ranked first in defensive zone face-offs with 159. The following campaign was shortened by injuries, including a lower-body issue during the pre-season and additional setbacks that limited him to 45 games, but he still produced 21 points and led Jets forwards in shorthanded time-on-ice.
As Winnipeg qualified for the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, Lowry played a key role in a first-round win over the Minnesota Wild and a second-round victory over the Nashville Predators that sent the Jets to their first Western Conference Final in franchise history. Tied for second on the team with four drawn penalties and fourth with 23 hits against Nashville, he earned a three-year, $8.75 million contract extension with an average annual value of $2.916 million on July 12, 2018.
Winnipeg Jets Era (2018–Present)
Healthy again in 2018–19, Lowry cycled through linemates that included Mathieu Perreault, Brandon Tanev, and Bryan Little while registering nine goals by March 24, 2019. He helped the Jets clinch first place in the Central Division with an 8–1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes and qualify for a second consecutive Stanley Cup playoffs. He later faced a two-game suspension on March 2, 2019, for high-sticking Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators, forfeiting salary to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The 2019–20 season brought another suspension after a boarding incident against Oliver Kylington of the Calgary Flames, plus an upper-body injury from an open-ice hit by Drake Caggiula that sidelined Lowry for roughly 20 games. He returned on March 9, 2020, against the Arizona Coyotes. After missing time in 2020–21 with a concussion-related absence following a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Lowry continued to anchor the Jets’ bottom six.
On September 12, 2023, Lowry was named the tenth captain in Jets franchise history and the third since the team relocated to Winnipeg. In the 2025 playoffs, he scored goals in Game 1, Game 2, and the double-overtime Game 7 winner against the St. Louis Blues, before adding one goal in a six-game second-round loss to the Dallas Stars. On November 19, 2025, he signed a five-year, $25 million extension that runs through the 2030–31 season.
Driving Style and Strengths
Although not a race car driver, Lowry has built his reputation on a physical, defense-first style of hockey. He excels in face-offs, has led Jets forwards in shorthanded time-on-ice in multiple seasons, and consistently ranks among his team’s top hitters. His blend of size, durability, and two-way responsibility has made him a trusted centre in all situations.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among his signature moments, Lowry scored his first NHL goal on October 21, 2014, became the fastest rookie to score in an NHL playoff debut in eight years on April 16, 2015, and was part of the 2018 run that delivered the Jets’ first Western Conference Final appearance since relocation. His overtime winner in Game 7 of the 2025 first-round series against the St. Louis Blues stands as one of the defining goals of his tenure.
