Akil Baddoo Bio
Akil Neomon Baddoo (born August 16, 1998) is an American professional baseball outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball (MLB). A former Rule 5 draft pick, Baddoo burst onto the MLB scene with one of the most memorable opening weeks any Tigers rookie has produced. He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers and in the minor leagues across the Twins organization.
Early Life and Background
Akil Neomon Baddoo was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, to parents John and Akilah. His father’s family is originally from Ghana, and his mother’s family is from Trinidad and Tobago, giving him a multicultural Caribbean and West African heritage. He grew up playing youth sports in the greater Washington, D.C., area before his family moved south.
He was educated and played varsity baseball at Salem High School in Conyers, Georgia, where he developed into a promising outfield prospect. His blend of speed, contact skills, and raw power drew the attention of major league scouts during his high school years. Baddoo’s senior season cemented his status as one of the top amateur outfielders in the 2016 draft class.
Path to Baseball
Baddoo’s professional career began on draft night in 2016, when the Minnesota Twins selected him in the second round with the 74th overall pick. He spent two seasons in the Twins’ rookie affiliates with the Gulf Coast League Twins and Elizabethton Twins, working on his plate discipline and outfield routes. In 2018, he was assigned to the Single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels, where he batted .243/.352/.419 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, and 24 stolen bases across 113 games.
Baddoo moved up to the High-A Fort Myers Miracle for the 2019 season, but played only 29 games before requiring Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. The injury, combined with the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, kept Baddoo out of game action in 2020. His selection in the Rule 5 draft that December gave him a second chance to revive his career.
Akil Baddoo Career
Early Career (2016–2020)
After being drafted in 2016, Baddoo climbed steadily through Minnesota’s farm system. His first full-season assignment at Cedar Rapids in 2018 produced double-digit homers and steals, establishing him as a versatile offensive threat. The 2019 Tommy John surgery was a setback, and the lost 2020 minor league season stalled his development, but the Twins still valued his tools enough to keep him on the major league roster heading into the Rule 5 draft.
Detroit Tigers Breakthrough (2021–2024)
On December 10, 2020, the Detroit Tigers selected Baddoo with the third pick in the Rule 5 draft. He made the team’s 2021 Opening Day roster after hitting .325 with five home runs during spring training. Baddoo made his major league debut on April 4, 2021, hitting a home run on the first pitch he saw from Cleveland Indians starter Aaron Civale. He became the ninth player in Tigers history to homer in his first MLB at-bat, and only the second to do so on the first pitch, following George Vico in 1948.
The next day, Baddoo hit his first career grand slam off Randy Dobnak of the Minnesota Twins, becoming the first player in franchise history to homer in each of his first two career games. On April 6, he recorded his first career walk-off hit, a 10th-inning RBI single off Hansel Robles, becoming the first MLB player since at least 1900 with two homers, including a grand slam, and a walk-off hit in his first three games. On April 13, Baddoo’s fourth home run of the season made him the first Tigers player since Don Ross in 1938 to drive in a run in at least six of his first eight career games. He finished 2021 hitting .259 with 13 home runs, 55 RBI, and 18 stolen bases, earning the Detroit Tigers-Detroit Sports Media Association Rookie of the Year award.
Baddoo’s sophomore season was far more difficult. He made the 2022 Opening Day roster as the Tigers’ starting center fielder, but was sent down to Triple-A Toledo on May 9 after posting a .140 average. He was recalled on July 11 after hitting .300 with a .405 on-base percentage in 30 games with Toledo, but finished the year batting .204 with two home runs. Baddoo was optioned to Toledo to start 2023, was recalled on April 8, and played 112 games for Detroit, batting .218/.310/.372 with 11 home runs, 34 RBI, and 14 stolen bases. In 2024, he appeared in 31 games for Detroit, batting .137/.220/.301 with two home runs, and was designated for assignment on December 10, 2024, following the signing of Alex Cobb. He cleared waivers and was sent outright to Toledo on December 17.
Milwaukee Brewers Era (2025–Present)
On February 20, 2025, Baddoo underwent surgery to repair a hamate hook fracture in his right hand, requiring at least four to eight weeks of recovery. After returning, he batted .245 with seven home runs and 15 RBI across 28 games for Toledo and the Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers. The Tigers selected his contract on May 14, but he went 2-for-17 (.118) in seven appearances before being designated for assignment on June 6. He cleared waivers, accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo on June 10, and elected free agency on October 14. On December 11, 2025, Baddoo signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, beginning a new chapter in his career.
Notable Events and Milestones
Baddoo’s first week in the majors in April 2021 stands as the signature stretch of his career. The home run on his first pitch, the grand slam the next day, the walk-off single on the third day, and the historic RBI streak that followed combined to make him one of the most talked-about rookies in baseball that season. He also survived a concussion scare after a collision with center fielder Derek Hill in August 2021, returning from the seven-day injured list on August 23.
