Alex Roldan Bio
Alexander Roldán León (born July 28, 1996) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a right-back for Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders FC. Born in the United States and raised in Southern California, Roldan developed through the American youth and college ranks before being drafted into MLS in 2018. Although eligible for multiple national teams, he chose to represent El Salvador internationally, making his senior debut in 2021.
A reliable defender and overlapping fullback, Roldan earned his place in the Sounders first team after a position change and has since become a regular contributor on the right side of the Seattle back line. Off the field, he is married to Stacy Marquez and continues to be part of one of the more recognizable soccer families connected to the Sounders organization.
Early Life and Background
Alexander Roldán León was born on July 28, 1996, in Artesia, California, in the United States. He was raised in the nearby community of Pico Rivera, where he attended El Rancho High School and played for the school’s soccer program known as The Dons. With the Dons, Roldan helped the team reach the playoffs in each of his four seasons and won a state championship during his high school career. He earned first-team all-league honors three times and was named league MVP following his senior season.
He is the son of Cesar Roldan, an immigrant from Guatemala, and Ana Roldan, who is from El Salvador, and grew up alongside two older brothers, Cesar Jr. and Cristian. His brother Cesar Jr. later became a trainer for the LA Galaxy, while Cristian developed into a midfielder for the Seattle Sounders FC. The family’s deep ties to the sport shaped Roldan’s path from a young age, with both soccer and the experience of growing up in a tight-knit immigrant household forming the backdrop of his formative years.
Path to Soccer
After completing high school, Roldan took his game to the college level at Seattle University, where he played for the Redhawks and became a fixture in the program. Across four collegiate seasons, he made 82 appearances and tallied 18 goals and 17 assists, demonstrating the kind of two-way production that would later translate into a professional role on the flank. His college career coincided with his brother Cristian playing for the cross-town rival University of Washington, keeping the brothers connected through the local soccer scene.
During his time in the amateur ranks, Roldan also gained experience outside the college game. He spent time with Washington Crossfire in 2016 and with OSA FC in 2017 in the National Premier Soccer League, gaining minutes against older and more experienced competition. These amateur and developmental stints helped sharpen his profile ahead of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, where Seattle Sounders FC selected him 22nd overall.
Alex Roldan Career
Early Career (2018–2019)
Roldan signed with Seattle Sounders FC in February 2018 after being drafted 22nd overall in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. He made his early professional appearances while also seeing minutes with the club’s developmental side, then known as Tacoma Defiance, as he adjusted to the pace and physicality of the professional game. Although he was primarily a reserve midfielder during his first two seasons, he still produced memorable moments, including assisting his brother Cristian during Cristian’s first MLS start against Sporting Kansas City. That game made the Roldan brothers the fifth set of brothers in MLS history to combine on a goal and the seventh pair of brothers, and the first for the Sounders, to start together in a league match.
Heading into 2020, Seattle did not renew Roldan’s contract at the end of the 2019 season, briefly leaving his future with the club uncertain. He was re-signed by the Sounders on February 17, 2020, and used the restart of the season to make a positional transition that would define his career. With opportunities in midfield limited, the club moved him to right-back, a switch that aligned his athletic profile with the team’s defensive structure.
Seattle Sounders Breakthrough (2020–2021)
The 2020 season, shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, became an important proving ground for Roldan at his new position. He played three matches during the regular season and was called upon to replace Kelvin Leerdam during the MLS Cup Playoffs as the Sounders reached a second consecutive MLS Cup final. The experience of contributing on a deep postseason run gave him momentum heading into the following year.
The 2021 MLS season marked Roldan’s true breakthrough. He opened the year as Seattle’s starting right-back and recorded two assists while playing every minute of the first six regular season matches. He also produced one of the more unusual highlights of the MLS calendar when, during a match against the San Jose Earthquakes, goalkeeper Stefan Frei left the field injured after Seattle had used all of its substitutions. Roldan stepped into goal for the final five minutes of stoppage time and recorded a shutout, becoming one of only a handful of field players in league history to finish a match in net.
Seattle Sounders Era (2022–Present)
Since establishing himself in 2021, Roldan has continued to feature regularly for the Sounders, anchoring the right side of the defense and contributing to overlapping attacking sequences. He has remained a trusted option for the coaching staff, pairing defensive responsibility with the ability to deliver service into the box from wide areas. His consistency has helped the club maintain stability on the right flank across multiple seasons.
In 2025, Roldan played a central role in one of the most successful stretches in recent Sounders history. He was a key contributor during the club’s Leagues Cup run, scoring one goal and adding two assists in the final against Inter Miami. His performance in that match was recognized with the Man of the Match award, capping a memorable tournament for both player and club.
Driving Style and Strengths
Roldan combines the work rate of a modern fullback with the comfort on the ball of a converted midfielder. He is strong in one-on-one defending, dependable in his positioning, and willing to overlap with wide attackers to create numerical advantages down the flank. His crossing and short passing game allow Seattle to build attacks through the right channel, and his experience filling in as an emergency goalkeeper speaks to his composure under unusual circumstances.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among Roldan’s signature moments, the 2021 emergency goalkeeper appearance against the San Jose Earthquakes stands out for its rarity, occurring only the twelfth time in MLS history. His 2025 Leagues Cup final performance, featuring a goal, two assists, and Man of the Match honors against Inter Miami, represents the clearest indication of his growth into a big-game contributor for the Sounders.
