    Brady Tkachuk Bio

Braeden Tkachuk, known professionally as Brady Tkachuk, is an American professional ice hockey left winger and captain of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on September 16, 1999, in Scottsdale, Arizona, Tkachuk was chosen by the Senators as the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NHL entry draft. Prior to turning professional, he played one season for the Boston University Terriers, earning All-Hockey East Rookie Team honors. He is the brother of Matthew Tkachuk, a forward for the Florida Panthers, and represents the next generation of one of hockey’s most recognized families.

    Early Life and Background

Tkachuk is the son of former NHL player Keith Tkachuk and was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, during his father’s tenure with the Phoenix Coyotes. After Keith was traded to the St. Louis Blues in 2001, the family settled in the St. Louis suburb of Creve Coeur, Missouri, where Brady spent most of his formative years. He was raised alongside his older brother, Matthew, who would also become an NHL star, and his younger sister, Taryn, who went on to play NCAA Division I field hockey at the University of Virginia.

The Tkachuk brothers both attended Oak Hill School at Villa Duchesne and Chaminade College Preparatory School. Tkachuk is of Ukrainian descent on both his maternal and paternal sides; the surname Tkachuk translates to weaver in Ukrainian. He is also of Irish ancestry on his paternal side, giving him a rich mixed heritage that has often been highlighted in features on his family.

The Tkachuk family has been referred to as one branch of a giant hockey family tree. Tkachuk is related to several other current and former NHL players and league industry members through both his father’s family, originally from Medford, Massachusetts, and his mother’s family, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is a second cousin of former NHL player and current general manager of the New Jersey Devils, Tom Fitzgerald, a second cousin once-removed to Casey Fitzgerald and his brother Ryan, and a cousin of NHL player Kevin Hayes and his brother, Jimmy Hayes. His maternal uncle is NHL player agent Craig Oster.

    Path to Hockey

After playing for the St. Louis AAA Blues U16 program, Tkachuk committed to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), where he played two seasons of elite amateur hockey. His development there led him to agree to play for Boston University once his NTDP tenure was complete. With the BU Terriers, he scored four goals and ten assists in 19 games as a freshman, ranking fifth on the team in points and earning selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.

Leading up to the 2018 NHL entry draft, Tkachuk was ranked second overall for North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau. He was eventually drafted fourth overall by the Ottawa Senators. On August 13, 2018, Tkachuk signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Senators, forgoing his remaining three years of NCAA eligibility to begin his professional career.

    Brady Tkachuk Career

    Early Career (2018–2020)

Tkachuk made his NHL debut on October 8, 2018, in a 6–3 loss to the Boston Bruins, after missing the Senators’ first two regular season games with a groin injury. Two days later, on October 10, he recorded his first career NHL goal, and first multi-goal game, in a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, becoming the fastest Tkachuk to score his first NHL goal, surpassing both his brother and his father.

On March 28, 2019, in a game against the Florida Panthers, Tkachuk tied the Senators’ franchise record for most shots on goal in a game with 12, while also scoring his 20th goal of the season to tie Alexandre Daigle for the most goals by a teenage player in a Senators season. He finished the 2018–19 campaign with 22 goals, the second-highest total among NHL rookies behind Elias Pettersson’s 28. In 2020, he was named an alternate captain and selected to replace the injured Auston Matthews on the Atlantic Division roster for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game.

    Ottawa Senators Breakthrough (2021–2023)

On October 14, 2021, Tkachuk signed a seven-year, $57.5 million contract with the Senators. Just 22 days later, on November 5, 2021, he was named the tenth captain in Senators franchise history. On December 11, 2021, Tkachuk scored his first NHL hat trick against Brian Elliott in a 4–0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, cementing his growing offensive role.

During the 2022–23 season, Tkachuk was expected to anchor the top line with Josh Norris and Drake Batherson, but a season-ending injury to Norris on October 22, 2022, forced Ottawa to shuffle its forwards, moving Tkachuk to a line with Tim Stützle. On December 2, 2022, in his 300th career game, he recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick, scoring his 100th and 101st career goals, including the overtime winner against the New York Rangers. He was also named to the 2023 NHL All-Star Game in Florida, where he played alongside his brother Matthew on the Atlantic Division team.

Later that season, in a February 27, 2023 6–2 win over the Detroit Red Wings, Tkachuk skated to the Red Wings bench at the end of the second period and challenged the entire opposing team, then scored a goal as the Senators pushed toward a playoff spot. Despite his efforts, Ottawa was eliminated from playoff contention on April 7, 2023, in a 7–2 loss to the Panthers.

    Ottawa Senators Era (2023–Present)

After serving as one of the NHL’s most recognizable power forwards, Tkachuk continued to lead the Senators into the 2023–24 season and beyond, wearing the captain’s ‘C’ and carrying the franchise’s offensive expectations. He captained Team USA at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, where the United States placed fifth, further demonstrating his standing within the international game.

Tkachuk’s tenure with Ottawa through 2024 and into 2025 has been defined by his physical presence, scoring touch, and willingness to defend teammates. His leadership has remained central to the Senators’ long-term rebuild and their pursuit of returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

    Driving Style and Strengths

While not a race car driver, Tkachuk’s on-ice style draws consistent praise for his power forward profile, combining a 193-centimeter frame with strong skating, a heavy shot, and an aggressive forechecking approach. He uses his body to win puck battles along the boards, drives net-front presence on the power play, and ranks among the league leaders in shots on goal and hits, making him a dual threat as a scorer and a physical disruptor.

    Notable Events and Milestones

Signature moments include his Gordie Howe hat trick on December 2, 2022, his first NHL hat trick against Tampa Bay in 2021, and tying the Senators’ teenage goal record in 2019. His bench confrontation with the Detroit Red Wings in 2023 and his captaincy of Team USA at the 2024 World Championship have further cemented his reputation as one of the league’s most talked-about leaders.

    Brady Tkachuk International Play

Tkachuk has represented the United States at multiple international tournaments. He captained the gold-winning U.S. under-18 national team at the 2017 IIHF World U18 Championships. The following year, he was selected to the U.S. under-20 national team for the 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Buffalo, New York, where he helped the Americans win a bronze medal. In 2024, he captained Team USA at the IIHF World Championship, where the team finished fifth.

    2025 Season Outlook

Heading into 2025, Brady Tkachuk remains the undisputed leader of the Ottawa Senators as the franchise continues its push back toward Stanley Cup Playoff contention. Coming off his captaincy of Team USA at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, he is expected to anchor Ottawa’s top-six forward group and power play, providing both scoring and physicality alongside linemates such as Tim Stützle and Drake Batherson.

The Senators’ 2025 campaign will hinge heavily on Tkachuk’s ability to drive possession, generate shots, and set the tone with his physical style.
