Joshua Norris, known professionally as Josh Norris, is an American professional ice hockey player who plays the center position for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing approximately 190 pounds, he is recognized as a skilled two-way forward with a strong scoring touch. Norris first entered the league after being selected in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks before being traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2018 as part of the deal that sent Erik Karlsson to San Jose.
After spending parts of seven seasons with the Senators organization, Norris was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in March 2025 and now anchors the middle of their forward group. Known for his hockey IQ, faceoff ability, and wrist shot, Norris has emerged as one of the more reliable American-born centers of his generation.
Early Life and Background
Josh Norris was born on May 5, 1999, in Oxford, Michigan, where he grew up alongside his parents, Dwayne Norris and Traci Norris. His father, Dwayne, is a former Canadian NHL player who spent much of his professional career playing overseas. Because of his father’s playing commitments, Josh spent much of his first 11 years living in Germany, an experience that allowed him to become fluent in German.
The Norris family returned to the United States after the 2006–07 season and settled back in Oxford, Michigan. It was there that Josh began taking his hockey development seriously, with his father serving as one of his youth coaches. Growing up in a hockey household gave Josh early insight into the demands of professional play, and he quickly progressed through local youth programs.
Before long, Norris began playing midget hockey with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies, where his combination of skill and poise drew the attention of scouts from the U.S. National Development Team. His rapid rise through the youth ranks set the stage for a move into the national program at a young age.
Path to Hockey
Norris joined the United States National Development Team Program in 2015, suiting up for the under-17 squad in the United States Hockey League (USHL). During the 2015–16 season, he appeared in 24 games, recording two goals and five assists for seven points. On September 21, 2016, he committed to playing college hockey with the Michigan Wolverines of the NCAA, cementing his path toward a top collegiate program.
After graduating to the under-18 team for the 2016–17 USHL season, Norris played in 25 games and tallied 12 goals and 26 points, showcasing a clear offensive jump. That same spring, he was selected 19th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, confirming his status as one of the top American prospects of his age group.
He joined Michigan for the 2017–18 college season and quickly contributed, tallying eight goals and 23 points in 37 games during his freshman year while helping the Wolverines reach the Frozen Four. The following season, Norris centered the team’s top line alongside Jake Slaker and Will Lockwood. He scored ten goals and added nine assists in just 17 games before a shoulder injury at the 2019 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships cut his sophomore campaign short.
Josh Norris Career
Early Career (2019–2020)
After his college season ended, Norris decided to turn professional and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators on May 27, 2019. He was assigned to the Belleville Senators, Ottawa’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, for the 2019 training camp, where he quickly adapted to the pro game.
During the 2019–20 AHL season, Norris recorded 31 goals and 61 points in 56 games, earning a promotion to Ottawa. He made his NHL debut on February 22, 2020, against the Montreal Canadiens. Although he played just three scoreless games before being returned to the AHL, his Belleville performance was strong enough to earn him spots on the AHL All-Rookie Team and the First All-Star Team, along with the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the league’s top rookie.
Ottawa Senators Breakthrough (2020–2022)
Norris made his full NHL debut in the pandemic-delayed 2020–21 season. He recorded his first NHL point on January 15, 2021, assisting Thomas Chabot in a 5–3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, and scored his first NHL goal four days later against Laurent Brossoit of the Winnipeg Jets. In 56 games, he posted 17 goals and 35 points, finishing second in goals among rookies behind Calder Trophy winner Kirill Kaprizov and earning a selection to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
The 2021–22 season marked Norris’s true offensive arrival. He appeared in 66 games and scored 35 goals and 55 points, leading the Senators in goals and finishing third on the team in points. Notable performances included a three-point night on December 14, 2021, against the Florida Panthers, another three-point outing on March 8, 2022, against the St. Louis Blues, and his first NHL hat trick on April 3, 2022, in a 5–2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Following the season, Ottawa signed him to an eight-year, $63.6 million contract extension.
Buffalo Sabres Era (2025–Present)
On March 7, 2025, Norris was traded to the Buffalo Sabres along with Jacob Bernard-Docker in exchange for Dylan Cozens, Dennis Gilbert, and a 2026 second-round pick. He made his Sabres debut the following night in a 4–0 loss to the Florida Panthers, then recorded his first point with Buffalo two games later, assisting on Tage Thompson’s game-winning goal in a 3–2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers that snapped a six-game Sabres losing streak. He scored his first Sabres goal on March 12 against the Detroit Red Wings.
After the trade, Norris was sidelined by a torn oblique muscle, an injury he had originally suffered on February 1 while still with Ottawa, and missed the final 18 games of the 2024–25 season. Now healthy, he is expected to play a central role for Buffalo as the franchise continues its rebuild around young talent.
Playing Style and Strengths
Norris is widely regarded as a complete two-way center with an elite wrist shot, strong faceoff numbers, and reliable defensive positioning. His hockey IQ allows him to read plays at both ends of the ice, while his patience and poise with the puck make him especially dangerous in the offensive zone. Pairing those tools with leadership qualities developed through USA Hockey’s national program has made him a trusted top-line center.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among his most memorable career moments are his first NHL hat trick against Detroit on April 3, 2022, his two-goal debut game with Buffalo’s victory over the Edmonton Oilers, and his selection to the 2019 World Junior squad where he helped Team USA earn a silver medal. His eight-year contract with Ottawa in 2022 also stands as a major milestone, reflecting his standing as a franchise cornerstone.

He won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s top rookie and earned back-to-back AHL All-Star Team honors before transitioning into a productive NHL scorer.

2025 Season Performance
The 2024–25 season was a year of transition for Josh Norris. He opened the campaign healthy with the Ottawa Senators and notched a three-point night on October 14, 2024, against the Los Angeles Kings, but injuries continued to limit his availability, including the oblique tear he suffered in February 2025.
His March 2025 trade to the Buffalo Sabres injected new energy into both his season and his career trajectory. Although he appeared in only a handful of games before the injury, his quick contributions, including a first-period assist on the game-winner against Edmonton, offered an early glimpse of his fit in Buffalo’s top-six forward group.
Looking ahead to the remainder of 2025, Norris is expected to enter training camp fully recovered and in line for a featured role with the Sabres. With his long-term contract in place and his offensive skill set intact, he is positioned to be a central figure in Buffalo’s push back toward playoff contention.
