Early Life and Background
Cody Austin Poteet was born on July 30, 1994, in El Cajon, California. He grew up in the San Diego County area and attended Christian High School, where he developed into a promising pitching prospect. After his senior year of high school, Poteet was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 27th round of the 2012 MLB draft. Rather than sign with Washington, he opted to continue his baseball career at the college level.
Following high school, Poteet enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he played college baseball for the UCLA Bruins. During the summer of 2014, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League, gaining valuable experience against top amateur competition. As a junior at UCLA in 2015, Poteet appeared in 27 games with 13 starts, posting a 7-1 record and a 2.45 ERA. He finished second on the Bruins in strikeouts that year with 68 over 73⅓ innings, a performance that helped elevate his draft stock.
Path to Baseball
After his junior season at UCLA, Poteet was selected by the Miami Marlins in the fourth round of the 2015 MLB draft. He signed with the Marlins for a bonus of $488,700 and was assigned to the Batavia Muckdogs of the Low-A New York-Penn League, where he posted a 2.13 ERA in 12⅔ innings pitched. The Marlins moved him quickly through the lower levels, beginning his climb toward the major leagues.
In 2016, Poteet played for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the Single-A South Atlantic League, starting 24 games and going 4-9 with a 2.91 ERA. The following season, he advanced to the Jupiter Hammerheads of the High-A Florida State League, where he posted a 3-7 record with a 4.16 ERA in 16 games and earned All-Star honors. In 2018, he split the year between Jupiter and the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp of the Double-A Southern League, combining for a 4-15 record and 4.98 ERA over 26 games, before returning to Jacksonville in 2019 to earn another All-Star selection and a midseason promotion to the Triple-A New Orleans Baby Cakes.
Cody Poteet Career
Early Career (2015-2019)
Poteet’s professional career began in earnest after he signed with the Marlins in 2015. His development in the low minors included stints at Batavia and Greensboro, where he logged significant innings and refined his command. By 2017, his work with Jupiter had earned him All-Star recognition, signaling that he was a prospect worth watching within the organization.
Between 2018 and 2019, Poteet pitched at the Double-A and Triple-A levels. In 2019, he went a combined 7-6 with a 3.56 ERA across 23 starts for Jacksonville and New Orleans, striking out 92 batters in 136⅓ innings. Poteet did not play a minor league game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miami Marlins Era (2021-2022)
To begin the 2021 season, Poteet was assigned to Jacksonville, which was now a member of the Triple-A East. On May 12, 2021, Poteet was selected to the active roster and promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He made his major league debut that night as the Marlins’ starting pitcher against the Arizona Diamondbacks, earning the win after pitching five innings and giving up two earned runs, while recording his first MLB strikeout against catcher Stephen Vogt.
Poteet was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right knee sprain in late June 2021 and was later transferred to the 60-day injured list, effectively ending his first major league season. He finished the year 2-3 with a 4.99 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 30⅔ innings over seven starts. In 2022, Poteet pitched in 12 games for Miami, posting a 3.86 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 28 innings, but on August 9, 2022, it was announced that he would require Tommy John surgery and would miss the remainder of the season. He was removed from the 40-man roster on November 8 and elected free agency two days later.
New York Yankees Era (2024)
After spending the 2023 season recovering from surgery in the Kansas City Royals system, Poteet signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the New York Yankees on January 5, 2024. He was optioned to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to begin the year, but was promoted to the majors as the Yankees’ 27th man for the second game of a doubleheader on April 13. Poteet started that game and earned the win, pitching six innings and surrendering one earned run in an 8-2 victory.
Poteet was placed on the injured list with a right triceps strain on June 18, 2024, and transferred to the 60-day injured list on August 1 before being activated on September 20. Across 5 appearances and 4 starts for the Yankees, he went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 24⅓ innings of work.
Baltimore Orioles Era (2025)
On December 17, 2024, the Yankees traded Poteet to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Cody Bellinger and $5 million. He was optioned to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs to begin 2025, but was designated for assignment on March 27, 2025. Two days later, on March 29, Poteet was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.
Poteet made one appearance for Baltimore before he was placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation on April 22, and was transferred to the 60-day injured list on May 30. He was activated on August 30, but was removed from the 40-man roster and sent outright to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. Rather than accept the assignment, Poteet elected free agency on September 1.
Cody Poteet Family
Family Background and Personal Life
Poteet married his wife, Madeline, a former UCLA women’s basketball player, in August 2014 on the UCLA campus. The couple’s marriage took place during Poteet’s college years, before he was drafted by the Miami Marlins in 2015.
2025 Season Performance
Poteet’s 2025 season was shaped by movement between organizations and injury. After being traded from the New York Yankees to the Chicago Cubs in December 2024, he was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to begin the year, only to be designated for assignment on March 27. He was quickly traded to the Baltimore Orioles two days later, giving him another opportunity in the majors.
His time with Baltimore was brief, as a right shoulder inflammation landed him on the injured list in April and ultimately the 60-day injured list by the end of May. When Poteet was activated on August 30, the Orioles removed him from the 40-man roster and sent him outright to Triple-A Norfolk. He elected free agency on September 1, ending his 2025 campaign and returning to the open market.
