Early Life and Background
Donovan Robert Walton was born on May 25, 1994, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He grew up in a deeply baseball-rooted family in the Tulsa area, where the sport shaped much of his early life. Coming out of high school, Walton was selected by the New York Mets in the 36th round of the 2012 MLB draft, though he opted not to sign and instead pursued a college path. He also came from a family with deep ties to Oklahoma State University, which helped shape his decision to continue his playing career in Stillwater.
Path to Baseball
Walton enrolled at Oklahoma State University, where he played college baseball for the Cowboys and served as a staple in the middle infield. He played primarily shortstop while also logging time at second base, showcasing the defensive versatility that would become his trademark. During his time in Stillwater, he also played collegiate summer baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2014 and 2015, winning East Division MVP honors at the league all-star game and co-MVP of the playoffs during Yarmouth-Dennis’s 2015 championship run.
The Milwaukee Brewers selected Walton in the 23rd round of the 2015 MLB draft, but he again declined to sign and returned to OSU for his senior season. In 2016, he batted .337/.428/.447 as a senior, drawing praise for his plus glove and ability to get on base. The Seattle Mariners then selected him in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB draft, and he signed with the organization to begin his professional career.
