Hinako Shibuno (渋野 日向子, Shibuno Hinako; born 15 November 1998) is a Japanese professional golfer who won the 2019 Women’s British Open. She plays on the LPGA of Japan Tour and the LPGA Tour, and she was named the LPGA of Japan Tour Player of the Year in 2019. Known for her smile and her steady ball-striking, she became the second Japanese player to win a women’s major championship, following Hisako Higuchi’s victory at the 1977 LPGA Championship.

Born and raised in Okayama, Japan, Shibuno turned professional in 2018 after passing the qualifying test and quickly rose to international attention with her major victory at Woburn. She earned her card for the 2022 LPGA Tour through qualifying school and continues to compete at the top levels of the women’s game.

    Early Life and Background

Hinako Shibuno was born on 15 November 1998 in Okayama, Japan, a city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu. Her father was a discus thrower and her mother was a javelin thrower, and she grew up as the middle child of three daughters in an athletic household. The family’s sporting background shaped her early interest in multiple disciplines.

She started playing golf and softball when she was a second grader. As a softball player, she was a pitcher and a converted left-handed hitter, while her golf career began to take shape with a third-place finish in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grader division of the 2010 Okayama Prefecture Junior Golf Championship.

At Jōtō junior high school, Shibuno joined the school’s baseball club as the only female player. After winning the 2011 Okayama Prefecture Junior Golf Championship in the junior high school division, she took advice from her baseball coach and decided to focus on golf. In 2014, she enrolled at Sakuyō High School, where she continued to play golf for the school team and won the Chūgoku Region Women’s Amateur Championship that same year. As a member of the school team, she won the team competition in the National High School Golf Championship in 2015.

    Path to Professional Golf

After graduating from high school in 2017, Hinako Shibuno attempted the final qualifying test to become a professional but did not pass. She regrouped in 2018 and split her time between the JLPGA step-up tour circuit and a single main-tour appearance, the Earth Mondahmin Cup in June, which she entered through a successful Monday qualifier.

During the first round of the Earth Mondahmin Cup, Shibuno scored a hole-in-one at the ninth hole and earned six million yen for the feat, even though she missed the cut. In July 2018, she passed the qualifying test and turned professional, opening the door to full-time play on the LPGA of Japan Tour.

    Hinako Shibuno Career

    Early Career (2018)

Hinako Shibuno’s first professional season came in 2018 and was spent largely on the development circuit. The experience helped sharpen her game before she earned full playing privileges.

LPGA of Japan Tour Breakthrough (2019)

The 2019 season marked Hinako Shibuno’s breakthrough on the LPGA of Japan Tour. In May 2019, she won the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup, one of the four recognized major tournaments on the LPGA of Japan Tour. The victory announced her as a rising star on the domestic stage.

Two months later, in July 2019, Shibuno added the Shiseido Anessa Ladies Open title after a playoff. Those wins set the stage for the most significant moment of her career, which arrived the following month at Woburn Golf Club.

    Women’s British Open Triumph (2019)

In August 2019, Hinako Shibuno won the AIG Women’s British Open, which was her first LPGA Tour event and her first time competing outside of Japan. Her composed performance in the final round made her the second Japanese player to win a women’s major championship, after Hisako Higuchi, who won the 1977 LPGA Championship. She was also the second player this decade to win in her major debut, following Kim Hyo-joo at the 2014 Evian Championship.

The victory brought her immediate global recognition and was a defining moment for Japanese women’s golf. The triumph was later recognized at home, as she was named the LPGA of Japan Tour Player of the Year for 2019.

    LPGA Tour Era (2022–Present)

Hinako Shibuno earned her card for the 2022 LPGA Tour through qualifying school, expanding her playing schedule to include the premier American-based tour alongside her commitments in Japan. Driving Style and Strengths

Shibuno built her reputation on a steady, balanced ball-striking game and a calm demeanor that has masked her relative inexperience on the biggest stages. Her competitive background in softball and baseball, including time as the only girl on her junior high baseball team, helped develop the focus and competitive instincts that carried into her professional career.

    Notable Events and Milestones

Her 2019 AIG Women’s British Open victory stands as her signature achievement, marking her as only the second Japanese woman to capture a major title. Her hole-in-one at the 2018 Earth Mondahmin Cup remains another memorable milestone, producing one of the largest single-shot paydays of her early career.
