J.P. France Bio
Jonathan Patrick France, known professionally as J.P. France, is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on April 4, 1995, in Luling, Louisiana, France was selected by the Astros in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB draft and made his major league debut in 2023. A starting pitcher who has also contributed out of the bullpen, France has built his career as a homegrown Astros arm developed through the organization’s minor league system.
Early Life and Background
France grew up in Luling, Louisiana, a small community along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. He attended Archbishop Shaw High School, where he developed as a pitcher and earned attention from college baseball programs. His high school experience laid the foundation for his transition into competitive collegiate baseball.
After completing his time at Archbishop Shaw, France enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he played college baseball for the Tulane Green Wave. The decision to attend Tulane allowed him to remain close to his Louisiana roots while facing strong competition in NCAA Division I baseball. He progressed through the Green Wave pitching staff before his career was interrupted by injury.
Path to Professional Baseball
France missed his sophomore season at Tulane while recovering from Tommy John surgery, a common procedure for pitchers that repairs the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. He returned to the Green Wave as a redshirt junior and posted a 5–5 win–loss record with a 3.84 earned run average and 73 strikeouts over 96 innings pitched. Across his career at Tulane, he recorded a 13–12 mark with a 4.01 ERA.
Following that season, France transferred to Mississippi State University to play for the Bulldogs in his final year of eligibility, giving him one more season of high-level college competition. After completing his time at Mississippi State, France entered the 2018 MLB draft, where the Houston Astros selected him in the 14th round with the 432nd overall pick. He signed with the organization and began his professional career in the Astros farm system.

Minor League Development
After signing with Houston, France was assigned to the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York–Penn League and was initially moved to the bullpen. He was later promoted to the Single-A Quad Cities River Bandits as he continued to develop his pitch repertoire and durability. In 2019, France spent the season with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers of the High-A Carolina League, where the Astros used him primarily as a starting pitcher.
France did not appear in any games in 2020 after the minor league season was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned in 2021, beginning the year with the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks before earning a promotion to the Triple-A Sugar Land Skeeters. In 2022, France spent the full year with the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys, making 34 appearances with 15 starts and posting a 3–4 record and a 3.90 ERA with 136 strikeouts and 3 saves across 110 2/3 innings. On November 15, 2022, the Astros added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

France earned his first major league win on May 12, 2023, against the Chicago White Sox, allowing one run over 6 2/3 innings. On August 6, he made his first career relief appearance, allowing an unearned run in 3 1/2 innings and earning the win in a 9–7 victory over the New York Yankees. He finished his rookie campaign with 24 appearances and 23 starts, compiling an 11–6 record, a 3.83 ERA, and 101 strikeouts across 136 1/3 innings pitched.
Injury and Return
France opened the 2024 season in the Houston rotation but struggled to a 7.46 ERA with 22 strikeouts across 5 starts. On June 26, 2024, the Astros announced that France would undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. He spent the rest of 2024 and the early months of 2025 recovering and rehabilitating the injury.
On August 21, 2025, France was activated from the injured list to make his 2025 season debut and complete his return from shoulder surgery. His activation marked the resumption of his major league career after an extended rehabilitation period.
Notable Events and Milestones
France’s most significant early milestone came on May 12, 2023, when he earned his first major league win against the Chicago White Sox with 6 2/3 strong innings. His rookie totals of 11 wins and 101 strikeouts established him as a reliable rotation piece, and his November 2022 addition to the Astros 40-man roster reflected the organization’s belief in his long-term potential.
J.P. France Career Wins
France’s verified major league win total is anchored by his 2023 rookie season, in which he went 11–6 across 24 appearances and 23 starts. His first major league victory came against the Chicago White Sox on May 12, 2023, and he added a win in relief against the New York Yankees on August 6, 2023.

J.P. France Family
Family Background and Personal Life
France was raised in Luling, Louisiana, and attended Archbishop Shaw High School, a Catholic school in the New Orleans area. Public details about his parents and immediate family have not been widely reported, and he has kept most of his personal life private.
2025 Season Performance
France spent the early portion of the 2025 season on the injured list as he continued his recovery from the June 2024 shoulder surgery. His activation on August 21, 2025, allowed him to rejoin the Astros rotation and bullpen plans in the final months of the regular season.
The 2025 campaign represents a reset year for France, focused on returning to health and recapturing the form that produced his strong 2023 rookie totals. Pitching out of the bullpen or rotation down the stretch will give the Astros additional information about his post-surgery performance heading into the next offseason.
France’s outlook beyond 2025 centers on durability and consistency after a significant arm injury. If he can stay healthy and continue developing alongside the Astros’ pitching infrastructure, he remains a candidate to contribute as a starter or multi-inning reliever in future Houston seasons.
