    Jack Flaherty Bio

Jack Rafe Flaherty, born on October 15, 1995, in Los Angeles, California, is an American professional baseball pitcher who currently plays for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). A first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2014 MLB draft, Flaherty debuted in the major leagues in 2017 and has since built a reputation as a frontline starter. Over the course of his career, he has also pitched for the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning a World Series championship with the Dodgers in 2024.

    Early Life and Background

Jack Rafe Flaherty was raised in Los Angeles, California, where he attended Harvard-Westlake School. At Harvard-Westlake, his pitching coach was Ethan Katz, who would later become an MLB pitching coach. Flaherty pitched and played shortstop and third base for the varsity baseball team throughout all four of his high school years. As a sophomore, he watched two of his teammates and fellow pitchers, Max Fried and Lucas Giolito, get drafted in the first round of the 2012 MLB draft, an experience that sharpened his competitive drive.

During his junior year in 2013, Flaherty posted a 13–0 record with a 0.63 ERA, striking out 112 batters in 89 innings while walking only 10. That summer, he represented the United States at the 2013 18U Baseball World Cup, pitching more than 10 innings to help his country win the Gold Medal. In his senior season, he went 10–0 with a 0.63 ERA and was named Southern Section Division I Player of the Year, the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year, and the 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year for California. He finished his four-year high school career with a 35–3 record on the mound.

    Path to Baseball

Although Flaherty signed a letter of intent to attend the University of North Carolina, he chose to begin his professional career when the St. Louis Cardinals selected him with the 34th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft. The selection was a compensatory pick the Cardinals received when Carlos Beltrán signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent. Flaherty signed with the Cardinals on June 17, 2014, for a $2 million bonus and was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Cardinals, where he posted a 1.59 ERA in 22⅔ innings.

In 2015, he advanced to the Peoria Chiefs, going 9–3 with a 2.84 ERA in 18 starts. Prior to the 2016 season, Baseball America ranked him as the third-best prospect in the Cardinals organization. That year with the Palm Beach Cardinals, he went 5–9 with a 3.56 ERA in 24 games, and by midseason he was ranked 88th on Baseball America’s top-100 prospect list. He opened 2017 with Springfield, posting a 7–2 record and a 1.42 ERA, before earning a promotion to Memphis, where he was 7–2 with a 2.74 ERA in 15 starts.

    Jack Flaherty Career

    Early Career (2017–2018)

Flaherty made his MLB debut on September 1, 2017, against the San Francisco Giants, pitching four innings and striking out six, including the first batter he faced, Denard Span. He finished that debut season 0–2 with a 6.33 ERA in 21⅓ innings and was later named the Cardinals’ 2017 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. In 2018, Flaherty won a spot on the Opening Day roster in place of the injured Adam Wainwright and bounced between Memphis and St. Louis before settling into the rotation in May.

He earned his first MLB win on May 20, 2018, striking out 13 batters over 120 pitches in a 5–1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Busch Stadium. He finished his rookie year 8–9 with a 3.34 ERA in 28 starts, recording 182 strikeouts in 151 innings. The strong finish foreshadowed the breakout that would come the following season.

    St. Louis Cardinals Breakthrough (2019)

The 2019 season established Flaherty as one of baseball’s elite starters. After entering the All-Star break with a 4.64 ERA, he posted a 0.91 ERA in the second half, the third-lowest in major league history behind only Bob Gibson and Jake Arrieta. He won the National League Pitcher of the Month award in both August and September, finishing the year 11–8 with a 2.75 ERA over 33 starts while striking out 231 batters in 196⅓ innings. He became the third-youngest pitcher in baseball history to record at least 230 strikeouts and 55 or fewer walks with a 2.75 ERA or lower.

Flaherty made his postseason debut that year, making two starts in the Division Series against the Atlanta Braves and allowing four runs in 13 innings with 16 strikeouts. He also started one game in the Championship Series against the Washington Nationals. Following the season, he finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting, was nominated for his first Gold Glove, and was named to the All-MLB Second Team.

Cardinals Struggles and Orioles Stint (2020–2023)

Flaherty made his first Opening Day start to open the pandemic-shortened 2020 season but struggled to a 4.91 ERA across nine starts. In 2021, he battled injuries, including his first career injured-list stint for an oblique strain and a later right shoulder strain that limited him to 15 starts, though he still went 9–2 with a 3.22 ERA. The 2022 season was disrupted by another shoulder injury, restricting him to nine appearances, and in 2023, he made 20 starts for the Cardinals before being traded.

On August 1, 2023, the Cardinals dealt Flaherty to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for prospects César Prieto, Drew Rom, and Zack Showalter. He earned the win in his Orioles debut against the Toronto Blue Jays, going 1–3 with a 6.75 ERA in nine regular-season appearances. In the Division Series against the Texas Rangers, he allowed one run on two hits in two relief innings.

    Detroit Tigers and Dodgers (2024)

On December 20, 2023, Flaherty signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, going 7–5 with a 2.95 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 18 starts during the first half of 2024. On July 30, 2024, the Tigers traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor leaguers Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney. He made 10 starts for the Dodgers, going 6–2 with a 3.58 ERA and 61 strikeouts.

Flaherty started Game 2 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres and took the loss, but he rebounded with seven scoreless innings in Game 1 of the NLCS against the New York Mets. A rough Game 5 outing against the Mets led to eight runs in three innings, but he was still tabbed to start Game 1 of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees, allowing two runs in 5⅓ innings. Although he struggled again in Game 5, the Dodgers rallied to win the series, giving Flaherty his first World Series championship.

    Return to Detroit (2025–Present)

On February 7, 2025, Flaherty signed a two-year, $35 million contract to return to the Detroit Tigers. On May 22, 2025, he recorded his 1,000th career strikeout when he fanned José Ramírez of the Cleveland Guardians in the first inning, reaching the milestone as a foundational piece of the Tigers’ rotation.

    Driving Style and Strengths

Flaherty is recognized for his sharp breaking ball and competitive demeanor on the mound, traits that have allowed him to thrive against tough lineups in the National League and American League. His ability to miss bats in bunches, evidenced by his 231 strikeouts in 2019, makes him especially effective against power-heavy opponents. Teaming with coaches like Ethan Katz early in his career helped him refine his mechanics, and his composure in high-leverage postseason starts has continued to grow.

    Notable Events and Milestones

Among Flaherty’s signature moments are his 13-strikeout performance in his first MLB win in 2018, his historic 0.91 second-half ERA in 2019, and his Game 1 start in the 2024 World Series, which he exited with the Dodgers leading. His 1,000th career strikeout in 2025 underscored his long-term value as a starting pitcher, and his 2024 World Series title with the Dodgers remains the crowning achievement of his career.
