A product of the USC Trojans, he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has since built his career as a rotational interior lineman.

    Early Life and Background

Jay Tufele was born on July 25, 1999, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in the surrounding area and attended Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah, where he developed into one of the most highly recruited defensive linemen in the country.

As a sophomore in 2014, Tufele started on the varsity team and produced 63 tackles and six sacks, earning a spot on the MaxPreps Sophomore All-American first team. As a junior, he anchored a defense that recorded eight shutouts, making 57 tackles and 10.5 sacks, and was named the Salt Lake Tribune’s high school football MVP. Tufele did not play his senior season due to a torn ligament in his foot. In addition to football, he also played rugby during his high school years.

A consensus top-40 recruit, Tufele received scholarship offers from more than 20 schools, including Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Utah, and USC. He announced his commitment to USC on National Signing Day and enrolled with the Trojans in June.

    Path to American Football

Tufele’s early football environment, supported by his father’s own playing background, gave him a strong grounding in the sport. His dominance at Bingham High School quickly established him as a priority recruit for major college programs across the country.

Choosing USC allowed Tufele to compete in one of the most prominent conferences in college football while developing under experienced defensive line coaching. His reputation as a powerful, run-stopping interior presence made him a logical fit for the Trojans’ defensive scheme and set the stage for his transition to the NFL.
