Drafted fourth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Puljujärvi has spent parts of nine seasons in the National Hockey League, representing the Oilers, the Carolina Hurricanes, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Florida Panthers. Although he was born in Sweden, he represents Finland internationally and is a dual citizen of both countries. Standing 193 cm and weighing roughly 91 kg, Puljujärvi has long been recognized for his size, physical presence, and goal-scoring ability at the highest level of the sport.
Early Life and Background
Jesse Puljujärvi was born in Älvkarleby, Sweden, on 7 May 1998, to Finnish parents. When he was four years old, his family moved to Tornio, Finland, where he first laced up skates at the local club Tornio IHC, learning both ice hockey and bandy. In 2011, he represented the Finland Selects youth team at the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, gaining early exposure to international competition. His family supported his athletic development from an early age, and he grew up speaking Finnish rather than Swedish, identifying culturally as Finnish despite his Swedish birth.
At the age of 13, Puljujärvi moved to Oulu on his own to join the youth program of Oulun Kärpät, one of Finland’s most respected hockey organizations. In the 2011–12 season, he scored 15 goals and 41 points in 30 matches for Kärpät’s U16 team, then moved up to the U18 level the following year, where he recorded 51 points and earned the Heino Pulli award as the U18 rookie of the year. He also helped the U16 team capture a Finnish Championship. The 2013–14 U20 season was interrupted by a femur fracture that sidelined him for two months, but he returned strongly and contributed to a U20 junior championship silver medal for Kärpät.
Path to Hockey
Puljujärvi’s professional career began in May 2014 when he signed a three-year SM-liiga contract with Oulun Kärpät at just 16 years old. He made his SM-liiga debut on 10 September 2014 against Tappara, becoming the youngest player in Kärpät’s history at 16 years, four months, and three days, and the youngest to record a point for the club after assisting on the first goal of the season. In his rookie campaign, he scored four goals and 11 points in 21 regular-season matches and won the Finnish Championship with Kärpät, also earning Mestis bronze on loan with Kajaanin Hokki.
The 2015–16 SM-liiga season saw him establish himself as a top prospect, registering 13 goals and 28 points in 50 regular-season games and adding nine points in 10 playoff matches as Kärpät captured the SM-liiga bronze medal. In the Champions Hockey League that same year, Kärpät won silver, with Puljujärvi collecting two assists in 13 games. By January 2016, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau had ranked him second among European skaters, behind only Auston Matthews, and he finished third in the April ranking behind Matthews and Patrik Laine. In May 2016, he received the President’s Trophy of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association in recognition of his impact on the sport in Finland.
Jesse Puljujärvi Career
Early Career (2014–2016)
Before ever stepping onto NHL ice, Jesse Puljujärvi had already built a résumé few Finnish teenagers could match. In 2014, he became the youngest player in Kärpät’s history and one of the youngest scorers in SM-liiga history. His first full professional season in 2015–16 cemented his status as the consensus second-overall pick behind Patrik Laine in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The Edmonton Oilers selected him fourth overall, and three weeks later he signed a three-year, entry-level contract worth $925,000 annually in the NHL.
Edmonton Oilers Era (2016–2023)
Puljujärvi made his NHL debut on 12 October 2016 against the Calgary Flames, scoring the opening goal of his NHL career and playing on a line with Leon Draisaitl and Patrick Maroon. After 28 games and eight points, the Oilers sent him to the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL in January 2017, where he recorded 12 goals and 28 points in 39 games. He returned to the NHL for the 2017–18 season, playing 65 games and posting 12 goals and 20 points, with a career-high three-point performance against the Vancouver Canucks on 20 January 2018 that earned him his first NHL first-star honor.
The 2018–19 season was cut short by a hip injury requiring surgery in February 2019, after he had produced four goals and nine assists in 46 games. For 2019–20, Puljujärvi returned to Kärpät on a one-year contract, leading the team in points and goals and sharing the assist lead with Juho Lammikko. In August 2020, he extended his stay in Oulu and was named alternate captain, but in October 2020 he signed a one-way, two-year contract with the Oilers and rejoined Edmonton in December. Following the 2021–22 season, he avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $3 million extension on 26 July 2022.
Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins Era (2023–2025)
On 28 February 2023, the Oilers traded Puljujärvi to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Patrik Puistola. He recorded two points in 17 games with Carolina to close out the 2022–23 campaign. For the 2023–24 season, he signed a professional tryout with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was eventually assigned to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and debuted for them on 5 January 2024. After posting nine points in 13 AHL games, he signed a two-year, $1.6 million deal with Pittsburgh on 4 February 2024 and made his Penguins NHL debut two days later.
The 2024–25 season proved difficult. After nine points in 25 NHL appearances, Puljujärvi was placed on waivers on 30 December 2024 and reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. On 8 February 2025, the Penguins organization placed him on unconditional waivers to mutually terminate the remainder of his contract.
Florida Panthers and Genève-Servette HC (2025)
On 10 February 2025, Puljujärvi signed a professional tryout contract with the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers. After three assists in his first seven games, he was signed to a two-way contract for the remainder of the 2024–25 season with the Panthers. On 12 April 2025, he scored his first goal as a Florida Panther against the Buffalo Sabres. On 8 July 2025, following weeks of speculation, Puljujärvi signed a two-year contract with Genève-Servette HC of Switzerland’s National League, marking his move to European hockey once again.
Driving Style and Strengths
Standing 193 cm and weighing 91 kg, Puljujärvi combines NHL-caliber size with a power forward’s skill set. Sportsnet analyst Andrew Berkshire has noted his effectiveness in the neutral zone and his high rate of puck possession, loose-puck recovery, and goals generated from those situations. Canadian scouting expert Craig Button has compared his style to that of Jarome Iginla, while Puljujärvi himself has drawn inspiration from Evgeni Malkin. Coaches have praised his willingness to adjust, particularly his adaptation to the smaller North American rink during his AHL stints, which allowed him to find better scoring positions in his subsequent NHL seasons.
Notable Events and Milestones
Puljujärvi was the first NHL player since Brian Lawton in 1985 to wear sweater number 98. Internationally, he was part of the Finland team that won gold at the 2016 World Junior Championships, scoring 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points in seven games, finishing second in all-time U18 scoring behind Jaromír Jágr and tying Wayne Gretzky and Eric Lindros. He was named Best Forward and Most Valuable Player of that tournament, and later that year won another gold at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship, becoming the first European player to win both U20 and U18 gold medals in the same calendar year. In Edmonton, he earned the nickname “The Bison King” after a social media post featuring him giving a thumbs-up in front of a bison.
