    Jimmy Walker Bio

James William Walker (born January 16, 1979) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. After playing in 187 events without a win on the PGA Tour, Walker won three times in the first eight events of the 2014 season. He is a six-time winner on the PGA Tour and in 2016 won his first major title at the PGA Championship.

    Early Life and Background

Jimmy Walker was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and later moved with his family to the San Antonio area in Texas. He grew up in that part of the state and graduated from Canyon High School in New Braunfels in 1997. His upbringing in Texas helped shape his early interest in the game of golf.

Walker went on to play college golf at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he continued to develop his skills as a competitive player. He turned professional at age 22 in 2001, leaving Baylor to begin his career on the professional golf circuit. His time at Baylor gave him the foundation he needed to move into the professional ranks.

    Path to Professional Golf

After turning professional in 2001, Walker began working his way up through the developmental tours. He played on the Nationwide Tour full-time in 2003 and 2004, and in 2004 he won the first two professional events of his career at the BellSouth Panama Championship and the Chitimacha Louisiana Open. Those early wins announced him as a player to watch.

Walker finished the 2004 season as the Nationwide Tour’s leading money winner and earned Player of the Year honors, securing his PGA Tour card for the first time. The next year he split time between tours, and in 2007 he added a third Nationwide Tour title at the National Mining Association Pete Dye Classic. He has also recorded single wins on the Gateway Tour and the Canadian Tour, bringing his total professional wins to eleven.

    Jimmy Walker Career

    Early Career (2001-2008)

Walker played only nine PGA Tour events in 2005 due to injury, making three cuts with a best finish of 17th at the MCI Heritage. He played his first full season on the PGA Tour in 2006, competing in 21 events and making nine cuts, with one top-25 finish. He ended that year 202nd on the money list and was not able to keep his full playing rights.

After returning to the Nationwide Tour in 2007, Walker earned his PGA Tour card again for the 2008 season. He endured another difficult year, making 13 cuts in 24 events with three top-25 finishes, and ended 192nd on the FedEx Cup standings. He then regained his card through the year-end qualifying school, finishing tied for 11th.

    PGA Tour Breakthrough (2009-2013)

Walker fared better in 2009, recording his first two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a T5 at the Turning Stone Resort Championship. He finished that year ranked 125th on the money list, just enough to secure the last available tour card for the following season. In 2010, he posted a T3 and a T4 finish to climb to 103rd on the money list.

The 2011 season was his best to that point, with three 4th or T4 finishes and a finish of 68th in the FedEx Cup standings. He qualified for the third FedEx Cup playoff event, the BMW Championship, for the first time. He followed that with a 2012 season that produced six top-10 finishes and a 43rd-place FedEx Cup ranking, and he made 25 consecutive cuts from the 2012 John Deere Classic to the 2013 Memorial Tournament, closing 2013 with over $2 million in tour earnings.

PGA Tour Victories and Success (2013-Present)

The 2013-14 season marked Walker’s first PGA Tour victory at the 2013 Frys.com Open, after nine years and 188 PGA Tour starts. He won by two strokes over Vijay Singh after weekend rounds of 62 and 66. The victory gave him exemptions into the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the Masters Tournament, and a PGA Tour card through the end of 2016, and pushed him into the world’s top 50 for the first time.

He opened 2014 with a T21 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and then won the Sony Open in Hawaii with a final round 63, beating Chris Kirk by one stroke. Five weeks later, Walker won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am by one stroke over Dustin Johnson and Jim Renner, his third win of the season in just eight starts. Those wins moved him to the top of the 2014 money list, the FedEx Cup standings, and the Ryder Cup points standings, and he earned a spot on the 2014 Ryder Cup team.

In January 2015, Walker lost in a sudden-death playoff at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions to Patrick Reed. The following week, he defended his Sony Open in Hawaii title with a nine-stroke victory, and in March 2015, he won the Valero Texas Open by four strokes over Jordan Spieth, capturing his hometown event and reaching the world’s top 10 for the first time. The 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club then delivered his first major title. Walker shot 65-66-68-67, including a bogey-free final round 67, to win by one stroke over Jason Day.

    Driving Style and Strengths

Walker is recognized for his steady ball-striking and calm temperament under pressure, which helped him close out his first major at Baltusrol with a bogey-free final round. He pairs well with his long-time caddie Andy Sanders, whose course management has been a steady influence, and his accuracy off the tee has been a particular strength in major championships. His experience as an astrophotographer has also been noted as a window into his patient, detail-oriented approach away from the course.

    Notable Events and Milestones

Walker’s three-win run in the first eight events of 2014 is one of the strongest opening stretches in recent PGA Tour history, ending a drought of 187 winless starts. His 2016 PGA Championship victory at Baltusrol stands as his career-defining moment, and his appearance on the 2014 Ryder Cup team marked his first appearance in that event. He has also held the course record of 61 at San Antonio Country Club, his home course in San Antonio, Texas.

    2025 Season Performance

With several major champions and long-time PGA Tour members aging out of full status, his veteran presence has been a steady locker-room influence. He has spoken openly about appreciating each opportunity to compete at the highest level.

With a major title, a Ryder Cup appearance, and six PGA Tour wins already on his resume, Walker’s 2025 goals are less about adding trophies and more about extending his career on his own terms. His longevity on tour and his composure in the biggest moments continue to make him a respected figure among peers and fans alike.
