John Carlson Bio
John Carlson is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on January 10, 1990, in Natick, Massachusetts, he was drafted by the Capitals in the first round, 27th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Before reaching the NHL, Carlson developed through the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Indiana Ice, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the London Knights, and the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hershey Bears. Early Life and Background
John Carlson was born in Natick, Massachusetts, on January 10, 1990, to parents Richard Carlson and Angela Dalle-Molle. Carlson is of Swedish descent on his father’s side. The family of four lived in Marlborough, Massachusetts, where Carlson learned to skate, until his father accepted a job in New Jersey when John was around five years old. The family then settled in the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, where Carlson continued his introduction to organized hockey.
During his youth, Carlson and his brother Andrew played junior hockey for the New Jersey Rockets in the Atlantic Youth Hockey League. In his freshman year at St. Joseph High School, Carlson played for both the varsity team and the Rockets during the 2004–05 season, registering 12 goals and 19 points in 21 games to help lead St. Joseph to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Sweet 16 tournament. He then dedicated his sophomore and junior years to the Rockets under coach Bob Thornton.
Path to Hockey
While playing for the Rockets in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, Carlson scored 50 points in 44 games during the 2006–07 season and earned the league’s Offensive Defenseman of the Year Award. His play drew the attention of NHL and USHL scouts, and he was also recruited by Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Bobby Orr to become his client. The growing attention led him to transfer to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis for his senior year so he could play one season with the Indiana Ice of the USHL.
As a 17-year-old, Carlson played 59 games for the Indiana Ice, recording 12 goals and 43 points, and was named to the USHL’s 2007–08 Second All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team. London Knights Era (2008–2009)
After participating in the Washington Capitals training camp and two preseason games, Carlson joined the London Knights for the 2008–09 OHL season. He scored four goals and 10 assists over his first 12 games and signed an entry-level contract with the Capitals on November 13, 2008. His play helped the Knights hold a 9–1–0–0 record through December, and he was named the OHL Rookie of the Month for December and OHL Defenceman of the Month for January after leading all OHL defensemen in scoring.
