Rasmus Sandin Bio
Carl Erik Rasmus Sandin is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the first round, 29th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2018 NHL entry draft. Before joining the NHL, Sandin played five games for Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing roughly 183 pounds, Sandin has built his reputation as a smooth-skating, offensively capable blueliner. He represented Sweden at multiple international tournaments, including the World Juniors and the 2023 IIHF World Championship. In 2023, he was also named an ambassador for the Börje Salming ALS Foundation.
Early Life and Background
Carl Erik Rasmus Sandin was born on 7 March 2000, in Uppsala, Sweden, to Helena and Patric Sandin. He grew up alongside his older brother Linus, who also plays professional hockey, which gave Sandin an early familiarity with the demands of the sport.
Sandin chose to study English in school rather than Spanish or German, a decision that helped him adjust quickly when his career later took him to North America. Coming from a Swedish family with a clear connection to the game, Sandin developed his skills in local youth programs before entering one of Sweden’s top development organizations.
Path to Hockey
Sandin signed with the Modo Hockey organization at the age of 15, and during the 2016–17 season he played for Brynäs IF in the J20 Nationell. After recording three goals and 15 assists in 18 games, he was selected in the first round of the CHL Import Draft by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Rather than reporting immediately to the Ontario Hockey League, Sandin returned to Sweden and began his professional career with Rögle BK of the SHL. He picked up one assist in five games before using his out-clause to join the Greyhounds for the 2017–18 season, where he believed he could secure more ice time and raise his draft profile.

Early Career (2017–2018)
Upon arriving in Sault Ste. Marie, Sandin was paired with Conor Timmins and quickly became one of the Greyhounds’ top defensemen. He made his OHL debut on 28 October 2017, in a loss to the Sarnia Sting, and scored his first OHL goal in his third game, lifting the team to a 5–4 overtime win against the Sudbury Wolves.
As the Greyhounds put together a franchise-record 23 consecutive wins, Sandin rose through the NHL Central Scouting Bureau rankings. He was named to the 2018 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and earned the OHL Rookie of the Month award in December after recording nine points in 11 games. Sandin finished his rookie season leading all rookie defensemen with 12 goals and 33 assists for 45 points, earning team Rookie of the Year honors, an Emms Family Award finalist nod, and a place on the 2017–18 OHL All-Rookie First Team. He was eventually selected 29th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs and signed a three-year entry-level contract on 16 July 2018.
Toronto Maple Leafs Era (2018–2023)
Sandin began his North American pro career with the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, for the 2018–19 season. He scored his first AHL goal in his debut on 26 October against the Syracuse Crunch and, at 18, became the youngest player on any AHL roster. After missing time with a thumb injury and then an elbow injury suffered at the 2019 World Juniors, Sandin set a Marlies franchise record for the longest point streak by a defenceman and finished the year with six goals and 28 points in 44 games, adding 10 points in 13 playoff contests.
Named to Toronto’s opening night roster for the 2019–20 season, Sandin picked up his first NHL point, an assist, on 2 October 2019 against the Ottawa Senators, becoming the first 19-year-old Leafs defenseman since Morgan Rielly in 2013. He recorded his first NHL goal and an assist in a 5–2 win over the Nashville Predators on 27 January 2020. The following season was disrupted by injury and pandemic-related lineup decisions, but Sandin made his 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs debut against the Montreal Canadiens and scored his first playoff goal in Game 2.
Washington Capitals Era (2023–Present)
On 28 February 2023, Sandin was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round draft pick. After clearing visa issues, he made his Capitals debut on 4 March and became the first defenseman in franchise history to score three points in his team debut. With John Carlson sidelined by injury, Sandin averaged more than 20 minutes of ice time per game and recorded three multi-point games in his first four contests, another franchise first.
He finished the 2022–23 campaign with career highs of seven goals and 28 assists in 71 games and ranked second on the team in average time on ice. On 6 March 2024, Sandin signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension with the Capitals as a restricted free agent. An upper-body injury suffered on 7 April limited him late in the 2023–24 regular season, but he still set new career highs with 20 assists and 23 points before returning for Game 4 of the first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers.
