Isaac grew up in a large family and rose to national prominence as one of the top-ranked high school recruits in the country. After a standout freshman year at Florida State, he declared for the NBA draft and has spent his entire professional career with the Magic.
Early Life and Background
Jonathan Judah Isaac was born on October 3, 1997, in The Bronx, New York, USA. He is one of six children raised by his mother, Jackie Allen, and has one older sister, two older brothers, and two younger brothers. Through his maternal grandfather, Isaac is of Puerto Rican descent, which makes him eligible to play for the Puerto Rican national team.
Isaac attended Barron G. Collier High School in Naples, Florida, during his freshman and sophomore years. As a child and teenager, he faced periods of anxiety, beginning in middle school when he struggled to fit in as a Black student in a predominantly white school environment. That anxiety persisted through his college season and into his early years in the NBA.
Seeking to elevate his basketball development, Isaac transferred to the International School of Broward in Hollywood, Florida, for his junior and senior seasons. He later reclassified and spent a postgraduate year at IMG Academy in 2016, where he grew into the combination forward profile that would define his professional career.
Path to Basketball
Isaac blossomed at IMG Academy, where as a senior he averaged 17.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while leading the team to a 21–10 record. He was selected to play in both the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit All-Star games, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s top high school prospects. Recruiting analysts rated him as a five-star recruit and ranked him as the No. 12 overall player and No. 4 small forward in the 2016 class.
On July 5, 2015, Isaac committed to Florida State University, choosing the Seminoles over several other major programs. In February 2016, he briefly explored the possibility of entering the 2016 NBA draft as the first American postgraduate to jump directly from high school to the league since 2005, but he ultimately withdrew from consideration and reaffirmed his commitment to Florida State.
